Hey Marten,

Sad to hear about the tragedy.  Earlier in the year I was in contact with them about a potential trip into Atikaki next year.

Later.......Mike

I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at the Scout Base in Bissett, and taking canoe trips into the Atikaki Park.  I really miss being able to canoe there.

Atikaki. This summer. Now I have to re-start the research that I began a few years back to get ready for a trip in late July or early August.

I am working with Bluewater Aviation to set up our July-August canoe trip in Atikaki. There are going to be planes coming and going when all plans are settled.

Rates are basically $6-7 dollars a mile for a cessna and can carry three and 800 pounds but not canoes on that plane.

The Turbo Otter can carry 2000 pounds with two canoes on the floats and is about $11-12 a mile. You pay both ways with a 40 mile one way minimum. Our plan is to have the needed canoes taken in on the first flight in mid-July. Two hard sided sided on the floats and one or two PackBoat 165s as needed carried as baggage. Last flight of the trip will bring out the canoes on the Otter.

Are all the flights in/out of Black Lake? I think that's the one that you mentioned at 'copia. What is the mileage, roughly from the flight base to that lake? I'm just trying gauge costs....

HighnDry,

I believe this year's first flight will be into Brad Lake.  I'm told that is @ 50 miles from Bissett.  Marten is up at his cabin this week so it may be a while before he notices this post and either confirms or denies.

The game plan for our "exit lake" (ie. pick-up) this year will be further east, closer to Black Lake.  I believe Marten calls it Shiver Lake but he has also mentioned Giraffe Lake as another pick-up lake.

You may be thinking "Black Lake" because it has been mentioned so many times in the videos.  Then, again, I could be wrong.

Later,

Jimbo is  correct about the trip starting on Brad Lake which is just under 50 miles. First change out is from Shiver Lake (north of Black Lake and east of Giraffe Lake. There are many route options around Shiver Lake so other flights may center there. It is also just under 50 miles one way.

HighnDry,

Try these two:
1.       (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
2.       (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

If they are incorrect, well... I guess Mossback and I will be headed in the wrong direction this July... not that it makes much difference to me.  Wouldn't upset me terribly to stay away from Florida a few weeks longer than expected during the "hot season."  Of course, I'd have to stretch my food supply a tad but, hey, I can afford to shed a few pounds.

Good map source Jimbo. Thanks. I've used mytopos or something similar in the past to get topos for Canada but I like the maptown versions, especially if I can get them in waterproof versions. And now, thanks to Marten, I think I can locate Shiver (more or less). I'll have to ask Marten to remind me of the timing of the trips. I'm assuming they are going in around mid-July? to mid-August. If that schedule is different, I'm sure you both will let me know Smiley I'm looking forward to being part of this, this summer.
