Math is cool until it's not. I personally think that when the NBA, NHL, MLB, NCAA, Copia... people with real money to lose, suspended activities knowing the financial hit they and a whole lot of other people would be taking, - it was a real wakeup call for the nation.
It bought us much needed time to begin to evaluate what was and could happen.
All quite true, yet I fear that the only message that will suffice as a "wake-up call" for those irresponsible numskulls partying at the beach (& other places) may need to be something a little more martial in tone. The phrase, "Fix bayonets!", for instance, comes to mind.
I am a firm believer in the pursuit of "life, liberty, & happiness." However, one must first have Life to realize either of the other two. "Party people", selfishly exercising liberty to seek personal happiness,
clearly deprive others of Life. When exposing them, embarrassing them, and shunning them fails to work, we should move
quickly to stronger, POINTED measures already adopted in other countries... fines & incarceration. Ok, "bayonets" should be a last resort.
More wake-up calls are desperately needed. This is a situation where authoritarian nations with command economies have an ugly but distinct advantage. They can say, "Student body right" and everybody turns right on a dime (they would fear to do otherwise). Most of the time that approach sucks... except in a situation like this one. Democracies depend on "educated voters" to function well. When certain folks ignore education and
choose to be stupid, well, we all suffer.
Sorry about the rant. I look after an extremely vulnerable older adult in my house (Ha! Technically, I'm one of those, too!). It truly sickens me to watch behaviors of others who cavalierly put such life in danger.
