This link is in reference to Copia. Cool

I think we can all benefit from information sharing on caronavirus. We especially appreciate information from any medical professionals who may play here. Cool

Not a medical professional but a mathematician.  The issue is exponential growth.  And if things get out of control it will overwhelme the healthcare system so many of those who would otherwise survive with good healthcare (which is still happening now), would not because the healthcare system would be so over burdened.  Here is a chart. I cannot vouch for the exact number's accuracy, but it shows what happens with exponential growth.  Reducing infection rates (for example by reducing groups sizes) has major effects.  And at this point, COVID is an order of magnitude more infectious than regular flu (we have vaccines and immunities to regular flu).  See also this article, (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The article provides some great information about the spread of the pandemic. My concern is that not enough people are talking the virus seriously, and aren’t willing to do whatever is necessary to combat it.

This is the kind of information that is helpful. Thanks for sharing it. Cool

I don't know how to post the link but try googling "Event 201".  It's an exercise in what happens during an unexpected pandemic.  The excercise was held in Oct. 2019 and I believe was hosted by John Hopkins and others.   Pretty good read (w/videos) and chillingly accurate as to what is happening today.
Be careful out there.....we had our first death in Fond du Lac, WI a couple of days ago.

I've come to the realization that it's going to be like this for quite some time.Let's say after 3 months of people being diligent and no major gatherings have gotten things under control and there's hardly any new cases popping up.  So what happens if we go back to life as we knew it?  Concerts, baseball games, family picnics, cruises, etc....

I think it's like a dry forest waiting for a lightning strike.  IMO we need a vaccine asap.  And we need to better prepare this country and the world for the next one.

That’s the crux of it. And will things return to ‘normal’? What will the new normal be like? No one saw this coming, or if anyone did, it wasn’t taken seriously. I just had knee replacement surgery last Thursday so staying home is part of the plan. Cool

Azalea,

This is an EXCELLENT summary of the situation.  Thank you for posting that link.  Along with what Michael Osterholm has published and what messages Dr. Fauci tries to send us through the fog of politics, it is as good of a statement re: the current situation as I have seen.

I have long admired the poetry of math.  I believe the following quote says it all:

"Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers."

Shakuntala Devi

Every American should read that link you have shared, especially folks who still insist on "partying", or believing this is a hoax or will go away when it gets warm, or was ever "under control" in the USA.  The time for that has past.  Now it is time to try to "control the numbers" (ie. flatten the curve).

Thanks, again!

Yes Azalea, thank you for that link.  I'm also going to to include this 15 min. exerpt from a podcast of Joe Rogan interviewing Michael Osterholm not long ago.  He's a Twin Cities guy and I highly recommend the whole podcast which is on Itunes and you tube as well.  He gets into the moose and deer situation in Minnesota as well as where these viruses originate. Good Stuff

60 Minutes did an article on that a few weeks ago,

The flu is seasonal.  The hope (they do not know) is COVID will be as well.

I hear the first week of knee surgery rehab is crucial.  Best wishes on a successful recovery. I am scheduled for double knee replacement the end of April.  So far no word on whether it will be postponed, as many places are doing with all elective surgeries.

Good stuff guys!

I'm terrible with names BUT I always remember a face.  Wink When I watched that Joe Rogan clip I instantly recognized that Osterholm guy.

He's been on a few of the FOX shows I watch. I remember the first time I heard him talking about how so much of our critical medicine is made off-shore. I thought " I wonder how many people that NEED those medicines, know this? "

I've been telling people for a long time that we needed to become ENERGY independent and now we finally are.

This crisis will do the same for medicine, or at least it BETTER or we've have learned nothing.

NO critical item this Nation needs should be SOLEY dependent on getting from ANY foreign nation, even our ALLIES.

We need to do whatever it takes to bring that manufacturing here to America EVEN if it means we have to pay a few dollars more than we would for foreign-made goods.

I knew about smoking being a major issue in deaths in China. You watch anything about China, you know many of the men especially smoke non-stop.

He mentioned Obesity as being a high-risk factor too. With 45% of adults in the obese category, I hope people take heed to that? Now that we have to social distance, that means that people won't be going to gyms or maybe even outdoors to exercise.

In times of great stress, people like their COMFORT foods. A long period of social distancing could mean ever more people join that 45% population.

Good time to get into a home exercise program. Great to relieve the stress and losing weight will lessen your chances of death IF you do get the virus.

Now if I could just FIND some TP at my local stores Sad Angry

I'm working on my Paddling TP reserve right now. Wink Grin Grin

Best wishes to Old Salt as you recover, and to Azalea with upcoming double knee replacement.

I had both mine done, but not at the same time.  Always have been very glad that I had the surgeries, but I am sure both of you know that the physical therapy is the key to success.  I hope you are still able to get PT in your area.

I’m on my own for PT, but I knew that going in. I had my right knee done a few years ago so I’m familiar with what I need to do. I’m ahead of schedule so far. Thanks.

Math is cool until it's not. I personally think that when the NBA, NHL, MLB, NCAA, Copia... people with real money to lose, suspended activities knowing the financial hit they and a whole lot of other people would be taking, - it was a real wakeup call for the nation.

It bought us much needed time to begin to evaluate what was and could happen.

All quite true, yet I fear that the only message that will suffice as a "wake-up call" for those irresponsible numskulls partying at the beach (& other places) may need to be something a little more martial in tone.  The phrase, "Fix bayonets!", for instance, comes to mind.

I am a firm believer in the pursuit of "life, liberty, & happiness." However, one must first have Life to realize either of the other two.  "Party people", selfishly exercising liberty to seek personal happiness, clearly deprive others of Life. When exposing them, embarrassing them, and shunning them fails to work, we should move quickly to stronger, POINTED measures already adopted in other countries... fines & incarceration.  Ok, "bayonets" should be a last resort.

More wake-up calls are desperately needed.  This is a situation where authoritarian nations with command economies have an ugly but distinct advantage.  They can say, "Student body right" and everybody turns right on a dime (they would fear to do otherwise).  Most of the time that approach sucks... except in a situation like this one.  Democracies depend on "educated voters" to function well.  When certain folks ignore education and choose to be stupid, well, we all suffer.

Sorry about the rant.  I look after an extremely vulnerable older adult in my house (Ha! Technically, I'm one of those, too!).  It truly sickens me to watch behaviors of others who cavalierly put such life in danger.

I like your rant and feel about the sameway. I hear people talking about how they want the PERSONAL Freedom to do whatever?

What many, especcialy in the areas where that behavior is high-risk NEVER talk about or ACCEPT, is the PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY that SHOULD go hand in hand with that Personal Freedom.

You can bet that if a large number of those people that are failing to do the right thing get sick and start dying in significant numbers, they will the ones CRYING the most and DEMANDING something be done to help THEM!

Personal Freedom WITHOUT Personal Responsibility = Societal Chaos IMHO

Maybe if we changed the generational label for Millennial and late Gen Z'ers to "Team Typhoid Mary" they might start to clue-in.  For some of these, I use to use the phrase "arrogance without portfolio."  This demarcation has evolved over the years for certain "people" who's most significant accomplishment appears to be converting air into CO2.

Too harsh???

I worked with many of them right before I retired.
There are exceptions, young VETS for sure. But from my PERSONAL experience, I don't think your critique is harsh ENOUGH.

I call them MINIMALS. Thank God they're NOT the generation that had to save the world in WW2.

If they were, we'd be speaking German on the east coast and Japanese on the West. However we'd have plenty of SELFIES to document the HOURLY events of the day.  Wink Sad Grin Grin

I've done some research on youth and their ability to calculate risk-reward from an entrepreneurial perspective. Essentially, youth see "little to no risk" in many business ventures where a more mature cohort of business owners would calculate much higher risk. I am not surprised, unfortunately, to see that translating into social behaviors that are playing out now for Spring break. This can/and is easily translated into paddling behaviors as well in terms of taking on weather and water-condition such as rapids that a more seasoned, intrepid traveler would reconsider.

To be clear, I'm not painting a broad stereotype that everyone under a certain age is not careful, only that it is not unexpected to see a group of folks much younger than I am not take the current situation with as much gravity as I do. I only have to look no further than my own 17-yr old son  Grin Cheesy

Yeah, it's hard to come down hard on teenagers about this.  Their brains aren't fully developed yet and they simply don't want to be denied their youthful prime.  I feel for high school seniors.  They graduate into this mess??  Think about that.  They are ready to get out in the world and all of a sudden they are told to stay inside knowing that they have very little chance of being affected by the virus.  It's a slippery slope but I feel for them.

The Greatest generation was asked to go to war and save the world. The present generation(s) are being asked to stay home for a little bit, with the ability to stay in touch with everyone via the internet. They also have all kinds of media to entertain them.

What's the matter with THAT picture. Our Grandparents brains were not anymore developed than the present generations are. The difference is they had a sense of patriotism/self-sacrifice, and knew right from wrong.

Now right from wrong is viewed by many as strictly a endless GREY area. I still open doors for my elder's, women or anyone that looks like they could use the help. You very seldom see young people do even a simple think like that. When I was a kid that was just seen as COMMON courtesy, you didn't do it someone would let you know about it.

I tend to disagree with this generalization of today's youth.  I actually think every young generation was more or less viewed like this from the perspective of its older generation.  If some of today's youth don't seem to care or know right from wrong, to me it's more a reflection of how they were raised and poor parenting....

Looks like the young spring breaker in Florida who was spouting off about not being worried about catching coronavirus finally came to his senses.  From the news report I've read, he issued a very sincere apology for his statement.  It occurred to him that he had family, some of which were elderly, that he truly cared about and it was irresponsible of him to potentially carry the virus home with him to potentially infect his loved ones.

The statement continues with apologies to others for the insensitivity he demonstrated and his lack of comprehension of how serious the treat was.

It takes a stand-up guy to admit when he's wrong.  I think the kid grew a lot with this experience.

So there is a suggestion we've become our parents. Whether we did as good if job as they did could be debated. I think it's characterized by how when I was in school, if I wasn't doing well my parents held me responsible. Now, for the same thing, parents hold the teachers responsible. All mixed with a lack of leadership from our elected officials.

Pine Knot's 90 day trip to the Quetico sounds like a good ticket these days. Imagine doing that with no outside contact and then coming back out.   Shocked Shocked

One thing is certain - this summer will be unlike anything we've ever experienced before.

That was the start of the AGE of VICTIMIZATION.
Blame everyone, everything but the person responsible.  My parents were the BOSS of me, not NO-ONE is the boss of me.

It sure is going to be interesting.  I'm thinking a lot of last minute planning will be going on (including myself) and being flexible is going to be key.  It's going to be interesting to see how we choose to recreate once we start moving about again.
I got away with planning a 90 bike trip but I don't think I'd get away with a 90 day canoe trip!
Stay safe all.........

From my home in northern MN (Duluth) I can drive to the Beaverhouse parking lot with no contact with anyone other than crossing the border and showing my passport.  It is hard to see how I could carry any virus to Canada that would be transmitted to any Canadian.  But of course the Canadian government doesn't know what I am going to do.  Perhaps I would have lunch in Fort Francis.
Strange times we are enduring, but small potatoes compared to previous events.

If the darn Canucks keep the border closed but the BWCA is open, I suggest a modified Kruger Challenge.  Same start and end point, and all paddling is done on the border or U.S. side.  The modification is it's a race in which the winner is whoever takes the longest to get to Grand Portage.  The only rule is you can't exit the BWCA to replenish your supplies....it could work.... Cheesy Cheesy

Your comment about lunch in Fort Frances reminded me of the only time I stopped for lunch there. I was with a group going into WCPP and we stopped at the local grocery store and ate lunch out in the parking lot! I'm sure that there are better places to eat Smiley. I'm also hoping the border reopens by May but that is only wishfull thinking at this point. Wink

There used to be, or perhaps still is, a little roadside stand in Ft. Frances where we would stop and get some poutine.  It was on the way out of town heading north.  Great stuff!

Warning: Poutine, gambling and alchohol should be done in moderation.  All can lead to addictions which can be fatal Wink

Stay safe out there.......

There is a local Cajun restaurant in my town that serves Poutine  made with Andouille Sausage.  Fine eating, but having your cardiologist on speed dial would be a good idea.

You look at the size portions MOST people eat and you can double the following:

Nutritional Summary:
Cals
513
Fat
26.76g
Carbs
54.66g
Prot
13.25g
There are 513 calories in 1 cup of Poutine.
Calorie Breakdown: 47% fat, 43% carbs, 10% prot.

When I first started going solo to the Q, was when this nation was really talking about getting healthier and stemming the obesity epidemic and the related diseases that accompany it.

With over 40% of adults in the OBESE category, I say we're not winning that battle.

I noticed that the women I saw in Atikokan were much slimmer/fit than I would see in my semi-urban area.
I figured it was due to their rural/outdoor lifestyle.
Then I had a lull due to the recession that kept me away from the park for about 6 yrs.

First thing I noticed was how there was more overweight people in Atikokan than before?

I mentioned that to Q-Dave and he laughed and said " Did you see the DRIVE-THRU Poutine restaurant in town? He said they do gangbuster business all year long.

So enjoy it if you like it, but keep your cardiologist speed dial like MB says if you value your health?  Wink Grin Grin

A md doctor (non cardio type though) was along on the Banff trip.  He actually ordered it!  Of course I didn't want to slight him so I just had to indulge.  Once the clot cleared my heart a few days later I felt much, much better  Wink

Quetico Dave likes to tell the story about the 4 MDs from Chicago who came-up for a week trip.

They had wanted to go in at 3 Mile then to Wolseley/Badwater then out. but QD tried to dissuade them because it had been a mild winter and getting from 3 Mile put-in thru the narrows to 3 Mile might be a long slog walking the canoes thru?

Well they insisted and later that day he gets a call from the Native Village at LLC. Turns out while walking/pulling their canoes thru that narrows one of the doctors had suffered a fairly severe heart attack!!

Lucky for him, 2 of the other doctors were cardiologists. Dave went to pick them up and they preceded to rip into him accusing him of NOT telling them about the low water they might find!  Huh Angry Angry

They demanded he refund ALL their fees. He gave them a partial refund and they said they would never be back, which QD said was okay by him.

I wonder if THAT doctor was a POUTINE fan Wink Grin Grin

There was a facebook post classifying COVID like non-disasters in recent years like the Y2K situation.  I responded by pointing out how the list in the post only covered recent history and not things like the Spanish Flu.  One response, surely from a younger person, was but that does not count, it is was over a 100 year ago. Grin Grin Grin Grin

Life is all about keeping EVERYTHING in perspective.
Since I'm staying in like everyone else, I've been watching a lot more history documentaries. This series has been around for awhile but I just discovered it on YouTube.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The show is about 90 minutes and gives the breakdown of every major battle in WW2 both in Europe and the Pacific.

Watch the one about the Battle for Leningrad. The Russians lost 1.1 MILLION soldiers/civilians. The Nazis lost 800.000. This was just in one battle in a 4 yr war.

As terrible as Covid-19 is even with the WORST models we are not going to lose as many people as ONE major battle in WW2.

We are in a war of sorts with Covid-19 but we NEED to keep things in perspective. One of the first things these 90 minute documentaries prove beyond a doubt is that no matter how MUCH you plan or think will work, once the "battle" begins this RARELY work out as planned or as foreseen.

Like Mike Tyson used to say when a opponent said they had a fight plan to beat him? Everyone has a plan UNTIL they get punched in the mouth.

We'll get thru this. There are lessons to be learned IF we're willing to learn them. When the NEXT pandemic hits which it SURELY will, then we'll know if we really learned anything.

I saw a guy wearing this on a T-Shirt the other day.  I don't know if he made it himself or bought it.
I tried to catch-up and ask him bu couldn't.

            BUY AMERICAN
            BUILD AMERICAN
            SAVE AMERICA

If we learn NOTHING else, I hope we learn that we as a Nation should NOT rely solely on ANY other nation, neither FRIEND and especially FOE for our vital needs.

Y2K was a bust but only because even a dope like me heard it was coming and looked for dates in the scripts that I was using (borrowing) at the time to make this site run.

My mother now calls me twice a day to tell me she loves me. My wife, an essential employee, is at work this week on an on again off again furlough and our kid once joked about this being "boomer remover" while now my neighbors say they need haircuts as they display their anger at any perceived hurdle on the side of the road.

My president said he would (finally) do something similar to what I suggested in my last post before, minutes later, he essentially said that using the DPA wasn't really necessary for swabs since they are so easy to get.

As frustrating as being windbound can be sometimes, adversity can remind us how much of a small and insignificant cog in the wheel we truly are.

I let my hair grow over the fall/winter then get a short cut for spring/summer.

I now have a mullet and my hair being thick/coarse and wavy, I have to soak it down every morning unless I shower to even get it to comb back.

I ordered a clipper kit from Amazon and got an e-mail notice that they don't know when it will be back in stock.  Undecided

I might have to try a home cut with just my barber shears but that will be the very last resort. Cry

"Our biggest fear, and the public's biggest fear, is a spike again and it comes back for a second wave. That's what keeps me up at night."

Ain't a chance in heck they reopen the southern border this year.  I don't blame them one bit.  Unless they can test at the border it's gonna be USA paddlin' this year.  I suggest they charge $100 USA money and get a test at the border.  Make it worth their while.  Maybe $200 per person?  Anyone that tests positive in your group and the whole group gets turned away.   Cool

I gots the answers.  It's all about the testing.  Prove me wrong.  It's gonna be a spike here, a spike there, a spike everywhere!  If we don't go that route.

Another thing - this bit about all states doing their own thing?  I read that's like having a "peeing section" in the local swimming pool.  Good luck Georgia, and stay outta my state!

Let's say we had enough test kits to test 350 million people. You go get a test and you're clean. On the way home you stop at 7-11, and as you walk in the guy walking out gets within that 6 ft social distancing and HE hasn't been tested yet and is infected.

You get infected but you don't know it and then what? You'd literally need enough tests so everyone could test themselves before they enter their homes every time they left their homes.

How do you make sure everyone gets a test if you had 350 million of them? They would have to declare martial law and suspend civil liberties to FORCE people to be tested and THAT is never going to happen.

Tests are important but there is never going to be enough tests for 350 million people even ONE-time nevermind multiple times.

They need that combination approach they talk about every COVID-19 briefing. That and more therapies and eventually a vaccine.

I agree with BC, that Swedish approach just might
prove effective but you have to be willing to accept the cost?

I'm sure when this is under control all the methods will be scrutinized over and over and even then they won't find a one solution fits all approach.

A little cold but wonder how many people are not dying because of vehicular crashes and other things, including "underlying conditions" as result of pandemic.

The Swedish "herd immunity" has me wondering if this distancing isn't just setting the table for a second wave.

Also, from NYS, random testing suggest quite a few of us have had the virus and have recovered.

In the past couple days I talked with two friends that own commercial property. One is in WI and the other is in IL. Both told me that if the state allows nonessential business to reopen before people (customers and employees) feel comfortable returning - the tentative, we're all in this together type agreements made get blowed up real good and shit will hit seriously the fan.

I don't see the longest unguarded border in the world opening any time soon w/o some degree of confidence. A "peeing section" in the local swimming pool analogy was great. To that I'd add half of of all Americans are of below average - you name it.

The Sweden thing was interesting so I did my own math yesterday. My findings were summed up in one paragraph from the CNBC link:

"The number of cases in Sweden is almost double that in neighboring Denmark (it has 8,108 cases and has reported 370 deaths) and Finland (with just over 4,000 cases and 141 deaths) that imposed strict lockdown measures. Since their populations are each about 5 million — half of Sweden’s — the rates are about the same, although the comparison could be skewed by testing numbers in each country. Still, Sweden’s 1,937 death toll is far higher than its neighbors."

This morning I was watching CNBC and heard about a preliminary study from NY showed 20% of those admitted to a hospital died. 88% of those intubated died. Oh and also the current antibody tests suck unless (and/or) people can actually get reinfected. Does the term 'Boomer remover' work for anyone here?

So where do we focus? Testing? PPE? Vents? Our budget deficit? China? Iran? The price of gas? Immigration?

This is uncharted territory for the even the folks that do this stuff for a living. Anyone else remember going to Quetico before there were maps with marked and stared campsites and stoves and tarps and lightweight canoes and and and...

Excuse me, I looked at Sweden, Norway & Finland. I saw Denmark as an outlier and discounted it for my study.

There is so little we actually know about the virus in terms of trying to develop testing that spending millions for test kits that may or may NOT work as thought seems foolish to me.

We know PPE works because the idea behind it is so basic/simple. If you don't come in contact with the virus, you can't catch it.

I think we should put some of that COVID money into getting that UV light that KILLS the virus out into the general business world.

Most businesses have a foyer area. You walk in, your bathed in SAFE UV light. Maybe have them in areas like bathrooms/kitchens etc.

You go to Krogers, they have a cart area. You set that up so the carts are being continually sanitized as used. You'd get cleaned too as you pick one up.

Lights for your home and maybe a plugin one for your vehicle that will sanitize you as you wait a minute for your car to warm-up which is always a good idea.

Simple things like PPE and UV lights that we KNOW work seemed more practical and cost-efficient vs tests that no-one know will work long term.

Same with the vaccine cure. They don't have a COMMON flu vaccine because there are multiple strains of it. They have to adjust every flu season.
Sometimes they get it wrong. Sometimes the flu shot makes people sicker than the flu might.

It could be that way with any Covid-19 vaccine.
Then you have the issue of whether or not you can MAKE people get that shot? All kinds of legal hurdles there.

I could see a MAJOR economic boom in companies making those safe UV lights for all manner of uses.

You'd also see a boom for companies that convert/modify bldgs to have places to use that technology the best.

I'd rather count on things the KNOW work rather than things they THINK will work but THAT might change as the DATA changes.

I think if you take into account total population and amount of population density, Sweden's approach cannot be dismissed so lightly.  Consider Wisconsin or Minnesota like Sweden and compare it to its neighbors like Iowa or the Dakotas.  And I did suggest longer term - not short term - and developing a herd immunity. NYS sampling suggests 13% or so have had it and have anti-bodies.  Sweden is suggesting 40%.  There deaths per capita are only a little over US.  Could be - emphasis on could - that Sweden does not have a second round because of immunity while we do.  Plus their economy isn't trashed like ours is.  The facts and history of this pandemic are far from over.  And who wrote that passage - a journalist from one of the adjacent countries with a bias?

Looks like UV light and humidity are nature's remedy for killing the virus.

It sounds like a summer day in MI.
Lots of UV light and humid.

So compare Sweden to state if Michigan. Both around 10,000,000; Detroit and Stockholm close if you consider metro area; Michigan with around 3000 deaths quite locked down; Sweden not locked down and only 2000 deaths.

I agree but Stockholm is larger than Detroit but has fewer deaths. Just saying you can't dismiss the Swedish approach because of neighboring Norway and Finland. It seems to be about the density of cities. I Iive in upstate N Y and no deaths on tri county area, but the state leads the nation in deaths.

Hopefully we'll have answers from this pandemic before the next, and know what to do.

I wasn't dismissing it at all. Seemed to me Norway and Finland taken together was a fair comparison and found cases rising faster in Sweden the last two days. It was merely to satisfy my own curiosity.

When I read about percentages of people testing positive for antibodies anywhere, I'm disappointed the number isn't higher.

Basically, I'm just looking for better paths by other countries like maybe this.

I forgot people huffed Lysol. God that's nuts.

Maybe he thinks the kids eating Tide Pods were ahead of the curve or maybe it was done purposefully, to distract from stories like this:

“We need to significantly ramp up not only the number of tests, but the capacity to perform them, so that you don’t have a situation where you have a test but it can’t be done because there isn’t a swab, or because there isn’t extraction media, or not the right vial,” says Fauci. “I am not overly confident right now at all that we have what it takes to do that. We are doing better, and I think we are going to get there, but we are not there yet.”

Or another huge conflict of interest emoluments story surfacing.

I’m pretty confident I can withstand the Covid. I’m worried about my wife bc she’s a longtime smoker. But here’s what really concerns me. Scenario: local hospitals swamped and maxed out with Covid cases. On the job I get chest pains and my left arm is numb. I call an ambulance they rush me to the hospital and they tell me to pull a number like I’m at the deli.

This video Magicpaddler posted is flying around social media.  Read the comments at you tube under it.  Seems like Dr. Fauci has it in for Trump.  It's all a Deep State conspiracy led by Bill Gates and the Globalists to overthrow our government.  Or something to that effect.

I don't know if this guy is right or wrong but one thing is certain - he's riling up the far right wing.  He even mentions AK-47's and people "ready to go." This powder keg of a country is about to get lit.

No, I think there was another video without the reporters that I saw.  He mentioned that the stores were out of bullets and that people he knew were saying they were "ready to roll".  He also mentioned that trying to keep the economy shut down for political reasons will end in violence.  I'm sure the video is on you tube somewhere.  I don't want to post that crap here.

Also, this guy is a doctor.  He doesn't study viruses for a living.  I'd love to see him debate Dr. Fauci and others on this pandemic.

BTW, the comments under this guy's you tube are truly alarming.  Did you know Dr. Fauci works for the Deep State and is conspiring with Bill Gates and the Globalists to overthrow trump?  I didn't KNOW that......  Shocked Shocked Lips Sealed

I may sound like a jerk but I do care and pay attention to this stuff. It's a hobby. I'm just get tired of people using Sweden as an example. I don't think it's a good example at all and plus, don't they have government healthcare?

The video guys own urgent care facilities and their business is suffering? Sorry. Welcome to the club. I'm just not buying that the data backs up their theory. Well, unless 'boomer remover' is the goal. Which, btw, is actually an argument I always use to make as a way to save SS and Medicare. I was being sarcastic.

The real question I have (besides the best way to slowly open up our economy and keep our health networks from being overwhelmed and safe for the frontline folks) is the potential lethality of Covid-19.  The ER guys argue that it's similar to seasonal flu rates but the numbers they're using are really suspect.

We won't know true lethality unless the death numbers are accurate as well as knowing the total number of people infected.  Not sure which data is most accurate, but assuming the NYC antibody numbers are useful (about 20 percent infection rate) with population of 8.4 million and number of Covid deaths at about 12K, the lethality is about 0.7 percent, which is roughly 6 or 7 times more lethal than seasonal flu.  If we assume that rate for the whole US and that 100 million of us will eventually get infected before a vaccine, that'd mean about 700K deaths...can this be right?

Even if the lethality is half that, that'd still mean 350K deaths....this is why I think we need to be very careful about opening up too quickly...can someone tell me my why my numbers are wrong?  I kinda hope I am wrong....

I'm simply asking but are you comparing NYC stats  for COV 19 to NYC or all US stats for flu?

What seems uncertain is do antibodies equal immunity and if so, for how long.

And that's key to Sweden's approach - where they are approaching 50% of population with antibodies vs 20 in NYC an just 14 in NYS. Of course the availability of a vaccine could spin this either way.

I'm just trying to understand if Covid-19 is worse than typical seasonal flu.  I think it is not just because it appears to spread much quicker but also that it is more lethal.  I used NYC antibody results because it seemed as good a data point as any as far as estimating total infections.  Not looking at immunity since we don't know if antibodies = immunity, temporary immunity or no immunity.  It is my understanding that the lethality of typical seasonal flu is around 0.1 percent.  I did not think that rate varied from state to state, but maybe it does?

I would expect that subsequent waves of Covid-19 prior to a vaccine may lead to upwards of 100 million infections in the US population.  Could be a lot less if culturally we as a country keep adhering to social distancing, better hygiene, masks in public, etc as the economy opens up...

pine-knot - I don't know if this is relevant but (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) shows flu varies a lot be region. I also see that COV 19 stats in NYC are much different than in all of NYS (In five counties in corner of US where I live I think no deaths.)

I don't know what to compare to what but I don't think NYC to all of US makes sense. Based simply on reported deaths and population; 0.14% of NYC population vs 0.04% for remainder of NYS - more than triple.  (that 1 in 700 seems like good odds for me - especially considering I have none of the common underlying conditions to my knowledge)

Now - I'm not saying my stats are accurate or even relevant - but not convinced anybody's are yet.

PS - I have more confidence in herd immunity than vaccination in the short term of a year or so.  Not proven if antibodies mean immunity but they do for many other illnesses.

I can't get your link to work, Bill.

The number I look at is virus mortality rate (what I also call lethality since I'm not a doc).  So if I look at typical seasonal flu mortality, it seems to be around 0.1 percent give or take.  Although the number of infections can vary widely between states, urban vs rural, etc, the mortailty rate remains about 0.1 percent.

Re New York and NYC, the mortality rate is about the same.  For NY state, the antibody tests showed about 2.7 million infections state wide, with about 16,500 deaths at that time.  That gives a mortality estimate of 0.6 percent compared to 0.7 percent for NYC, probably within the error range).  Both are 6 or 7 times the mortality rate of seasonal flu.  All of this assumes the antibody tests give a more or less reliable estimate of total infections at the time (which no one can say for sure).

I also hope we develop some immunity to Covid-19 provided we recover.  As Fauci says, once you get 60-70 percent of a population to have immunity, the virus becomes much easier to deal with with even without a vaccine.  I agree with you on the benefit of herd immunity in lieu of a vaccine being developed....but getting there could kill hundreds of thousands of us in the process if we're not careful...

To preface this, I think our testing and official numbers suck. GIGO. Yet that's the hand we've been dealt so here goes.

My hope was NYC numbers would be worst case - considering population density plus it had to be there, getting a foothold, very early. Their heavy use of public transportation wouldn't help either so the 20% antibody rate is seriously disappointing to me.

The original estimate was, what, a horrifying 2+ million? Later it was 100 to 250 thousand. Then it was 60 thousand that we'll blow past this week.

700,000 in a year seemed like a fine educated guess to me at this point and cutting it in half arbitrarily sure makes it sound more palatable at the moment. Who knows though? Aren't we already at bad seasonal flu levels at what, two months in?

One thing about the flu is dose matters (I think - pretty sure anyway). My hope is smaller doses of this over time will help with both herd immunity and/or possibly severity. Moooo!

As an aside, a therapy would be helpful. I thought this was interesting if only to highlight how much we don't even know about the disease itself.

Try this. It worked when I pasted it in browser.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

or google "flu map"

Pine-knot - mortality rate to me means deaths per capita.  I thought the 0.7% of NYC was number deaths per number of people with antibodies, not the entire NYC population, just 20% of it - 12,067 deaths for 8,399,000 population or 0.14 %

US 2019 flu deaths 34,200 for 328.2m = 0.01% - a lot less than NYC; US COV 19 deaths 55,551 is than 0.017% - and sure to be double the 2019 flu before it's over.

(note in 2017-2018 flu season its was 80,000 deaths - varies a lot from year to year)

And I could be missing your point entirely but I think your .7% was deaths per 20% of population.  You did say "can someone tell me my why my numbers are wrong" but you use the term lethality, and I don't know if that is different from mortality.

I had read over 40% a week or more ago and suggestions of 60% in weeks from that.  I'll keep watching that.

I get daily updates from the Minnesota Department of Health which, among other things, lists by County the number of new cases, deaths, recoveries, etc. Doing a search will probably locate your state department of health/covid 19.

A few things stand out for Minnesota. The vast majority (2/3) of cases and deaths are in Hennepin County (Minneapolis). The majority of those cases and deaths are in care facilities. Ramsey County (St Paul) is a distant 2nd. If you look at the number of cases by county and the number of deaths by county to try to figure an average, the numbers are all over the place. It’s impossible to get anything meaningful. A number of counties have no cases.

Ditto Old Salt.  I look at counties around me, NYC, and all of NYS, and see same.

Lethality vs mortality - the 0.7% is in fact the NYC lethality as you state pine knot, but it seems you are comparing it to the mortality rate of flu?  Maybe not.

Was interesting to see that unlike the Covid 19, typical influenza does not discriminate as much by age.

Well, maybe I should not be calling it lethality or mortality.  Maybe I should be using disease burden?  According to CDC, their flu burden chart has flu illnesses, hospitalizations and death.  From 2010-11 thru 2017-18 seasons, if you divide deaths by illnesses (cases), the numbers range from 0.18% to 0.1%.  Although 2017-18 had the most flu-related deaths at 61K, the ratio of deaths to cases was 0.14%.  Interestingly, the highest ratio of death to cases was 0.18% which occurred in 2010-11 which reported 37K deaths and 21M flu cases.

My hunch is that is where the 0.1% number re seasonal flu comes from...?

In any case, when I look at the NY numbers, I still see a much higher ratio of deaths to cases with Covid-19, which indicates to me that it is much more "lethal" to us than seasonal flu.  The true story won't be known till we find out how many people actually die due to Covid-19 and the total number of people who actually contracted the virus....we may never know....

That is an interesting article, db.  Hard for a dumb lay person like me to understand without reading it a couple more times.  But Covid-19 is sure a squirrelly virus...

Heard earlier on TV a snippet of Dr Birx saying that what we really need on testing is a breakthrough antigen test so we can get results quickly as a point of care test...geez, another type of test to go along with PCR and serology (antibody) tests...

Here's an article regarding antibody tests that I read the other day....some are better than others, and several are useless...

I keep thinking that typically about 80% of deaths due to seasonal flu is in the 65 and older age group...do we have a fix yet on the percentage of deaths by age group for Covid-19?  Seems similar to me....

There's been an interesting development on the two ER docs's video and the data they presented:

ACEP-AAEM Joint Statement on Physician Misinformation

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) jointly and emphatically condemn the recent opinions released by Dr. Daniel Erickson and Dr. Artin Massihi. These reckless and untested musings do not speak for medical societies and are inconsistent with current science and epidemiology regarding COVID-19. As owners of local urgent care clinics, it appears these two individuals are releasing biased, non-peer reviewed data to advance their personal financial interests without regard for the public’s health.

COVID-19 misinformation is widespread and dangerous. Members of ACEP and AAEM are first-hand witnesses to the human toll that COVID-19 is taking on our communities. ACEP and AAEM strongly advise against using any statements of Drs. Erickson and Massihi as a basis for policy and decision making.

I cranked up that video and made it to the point where Erickson said “we took classes in ...” before I said NOPE!  You can’t start with an insufficient foundation and wind up anywhere that is meaningful.  I did look into their backgrounds for another 5 more minutes before confirming my initial observation.

Being a PhD and having taught research methods to all the PhD students in my college for two years, this kind of thing stands out like polka dot underwear.  Among the exercises my students completed was to select an article published in a top-tier, peer-reviewed journal in their field and perform an analysis of the contribution of the piece to their field.  The second assignment was to go back to the article and identify the things wrong with it.  They were given fair warning that finding nothing could result in an F for the assignment.  Finding nothing wrong was a rarity.

Are you folks as confused about our Covid-19 testing issues as I am?  Seems to be so much contradictory information, it's hard to know what is real and what is not.  I don't trust what most politicos say about it, but do take seriously renowned infectious disease docs, in particular Drs Fauci, Birx and Osterholm.

I found the following article co-written by Osterholm (U of MN) to be very informative if not depressing.  Seems that our testing woes will be with us for several more months with expected waves outbreaks and hotspots.  His last line line reads:

"Informing the public involves clearly acknowledging what is still not known about this virus, and it involves stating what tests simply cannot do. It also means accepting this painful paradox: We turn to testing in the hope of managing the pandemic, but testing won’t get better until the pandemic gets worse."

It has to get worse before it gets better was a mantra in my family as I grew up. For my parents, that idea was based on the their experience during the depression and who got to have more or less lard in their sandwiches.

For my older sister and I, it was based on the direction that the antenna on the roof was pointing via the remote control and who ate more spinach that day.

It takes two to tango on the border. Sorry to say, I just don't see it happening any time soon and I can't imagine some crossings being open while others are closed. I assume it would be all or nothing.

This is uncharted territory for everyone. It's awkward. We received a 60th B-day party invitation from close friends earlier in the week. It's like the weirdest invite ever. I'm just happy it's not a horn blowing drive-by and I won't be forced to socially hug anyone surrounding our accepted time slot.

Heard a veteran news columnist from Dublin Ireland earlier....said most folks in his region are showing "pity" for what the Americans are having to deal with....when asked about travel to/fro the states, he doesn't see travel ramping up anytime soon since the U.S. will likely be the global epicenter for the foreseeable future, even if travel restrictions between the U.S. and other countries were lifted....

In Canada's case, if the border ban is relaxed, I could see Canadians remaining at home but us "pitiful" Americans blasting across the border in droves.... Cheesy

Manitoba has Winnipeg but may be able to open up sooner. May be your early summer for Atikaki.

Time to switch gears I guess and pull out those Atikaki maps that Ben and I looked at 3 or 4 years ago!

This is the guy who's promoting that narrow ban (safe for humans) UV light as something we could do TODAY to help fight Covid-19. I like the idea of something easily doable over a vaccine that may take years to make and who's possible side-effects might be worse than the Covid-19 for people not in that high-risk category?

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

She also had on a couple of Pulmonary experts/researchers on a few days ago that I can't find the link too.

They were submitting an INHALATION therapy they made that triggers your lungs to give off a "toxic" substance to keep you from getting PNEUMONIA which is what's killing the majority of people who die from Covid-19.

IF it passes the trials, they'll give it to you to prevent you from going on a ventilator. I like that it gets your OWN body's immune system to fight the infection.

One "good" thing in this whole mess is the partnership between the government and private sector is going to bring new drugs/therapies and maybe in the case of that UV light, maybe as part of an infrastructure plan great benefits in the years ahead.

Another virus will come, how we LEARN and PREPARE for the next one will determine how bad it impacts us.

This is a link to that Ex-NASA engineer that makes UV light products.

He was interviewed by Neil Caputo on FOX and showed items that would be PRACTICAL/DOABLE right now. Even had a small light you could mount in a vehicle like a dome light.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Were going to be spending BILLIONS on an infrastructure package probably? How about some money to retrofit public buildings, a tax rebate like for SOLAR panels for home/business owners to retrofit their homes/businesses.

Not only good for Covid-19 ( they believe) but ALSO for flu and other infections. Hospitals have done this for years. When they set-up portable field hospitals to deal with EBOLA, they use UV lighting to cleanse them.

Practical/doable and scalable, problem to Common Sense for the bureaucrats to support.  Wink Sad

My deveopment has a community pool and we are facing what to do about opening it.  One person has suggest we increase the frequency of how often we bring in the sevice that cleans things (usualy once every two weeks).  My reaction is it is an outdoor pool.  Lots of UV light and chlorine.  What good is bringing in a cleaning crew more often if nature will be killing the virus in a matter of hours, if not minutes.

You're using Common Sense in a panic situation.  Wink
Not everyone is capable or even willing to do that.

Maybe show the powers that be that story about the UV light and put one in the men/ladies changing room for when the sun isn't shining.

One time installation vs ongoing cleaning costs.
One of those guys I linked to said you could build a UV light that would sanitize a pretty large area for about $200 in parts easily available on-line.

I'm sure there are some engineers/electricians in your community if they got together could build some units for cheap?

Then you have to get the powers that be to accept it but that's another problem altogether.  Wink Grin Grin

I thought this research which indicates that there is a greater number of deaths than would normally be expected and more than ascribed to COV 19 was interesting. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); I had read a few weeks ago that people with issues that would normally cause then to seek health care have not done so for fear of COV 19.  Stroke symptoms and heart issues in particular.  I think head of strokes at Yale-New Haven Hospital ER reported half the usual numbers.

And reading again today that 60% of people with the virus and of deaths are male.  I guess there could be reasons not specific to gender that are responsible for this - like out of house, working, traveling internationally, etc. - but a fact none the less.    (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I hear this about smokers every once in a while. I like it but eh, who knows.
“Smokers appear, at least in initial studies, to be underrepresented among COVID patients, exactly the opposite of what would be expected,” Glynn says.

If anyone likes to play with charts, here's a nice one.

There might be something to that?
I have a friend who was a lifelong smoker. He now has severe emphysema and carries a portable oxygen maker wherever he goes.

He's had pneumonia so many times every time he gets it the DRS tell him they don't know if they can save him. EVERY flu season for him and his wife is like what we're going through now.

He has a younger brother (2 yrs) who is also a life long smoker. He's cut pack to a half-pack a day but has had NO lung-related issues and in fact, his DR can't believe how good his lung capacity is considering his smoking history.

They joke that if his lungs can take all those chemicals in cigarettes it would take more than flu/pneumonia to kill him!!!

I posted this earlier. Still looking for the video link.

Quote:

They were talking about things I had never heard of but maybe that toxic substance they hope to stimulate is similar to one of those chemicals in cigarettes??

Lots of good science is going to come out of this crisis. IF we don't make full use of it to prepare for the next crisis then shame on us.

I couldn't find the exact link to the inhalation therapy for stopping pneumonia in Covid-19 patients that's entering clinical trials.

My Video card went out so I could hear the DRS speaking but could see/read who they were.

One thing I did remember is them talking about the lungs/body making PEROXIDE to kill virus cells.

This article caught my eye. It talks about the body using the immune system to make peroxide to boost cell's natural ability to fight viral infections.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

This article talks about using it in a nebulizer while the DRS I heard was talking about using a compound delivered via inhalation therapy to stimulate the body/lungs to release peroxide.

Different roads but the same idea.

Long after his Covid-19 crisis is managed, the result of getting the private sector to go all out is going to have long term positive effects.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

When I first read people were 3D printing ventilator parts, I thought maybe in the future there would be a 3D print shop at all major hospitals that could make hardware and even replacement body parts right on site?

Turns out these guys have one that uses NO electronics and is now being reviewed by the FDA.

Cheap, and one of their goals is to have this technology on site for when the hospital needs it.

Ran into an avid camping friend at the local transfer station yesterday.  He went to pick up his reserved BWCA permit for the 4th of May and was told he couldn't go (except for day trip boat or paddle trips) until the 18th.    So perhaps the 18th date will hold for going out into the woods; however it also had looked like the 4th would be allowed so guess we will see in 10 days.  An additional issue is that northern MN is extremely dry and there is a total fire ban in place in Superior Natl Forest and other local camping opportunities which even extends to propane camp stoves and burners.  I believe the NO FLAMES what-so-ever rule was to discourage many of us who thought we could camp in the National Forest or perhaps sneak into the BWCA early from trying it.

  IC,

I don't know if you know about these but here's a link to a website. You can find MRE meals for different prices all over the web.

For a quick trip in they might get you around that FLAMELESS fire ban BECAUSE they sell FLAMELESS heaters, the type the military uses to heat their MRE.

I've eaten them and they are not that bad.
Not cheap like DIY meals BUT it gets you around the fire ban.
Maybe you could use the flameless heaters to heat regular Mt House type food?

All you need in water ANY water to start the chemical reaction.

Here's another way to go flameless.
I bet you or your son Dan could copy one of these stoves for cheap.

Use the solar stove when the sun shines, MRE flameless one when it doesn't.

There is no dispersed camping or overnight camping of any type allowed in Superior National Forest. Fire ban is not so much about conditions (which are dry enough to support a ban) but about the difficulty of staging a fire crew during the COVID 19 pandemic. My brother is on the Inter-Agency Fire Task Force and they are really concerned about how to deal with a significant fire during the outbreak.
They will allow stoves when they allow camping.

Yesterday there was an update to stoves and fires on the USFS website - you can use your stoves.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Better pray for sun with that thing ST!  Cool  Or bring a bunch of citrus and just do ceviche.

The website I found that has many versions of DIY and commercially made solar cookers. They have pics/plans to make some too.

IF weight wasn't a consideration I think this might be the ticket for 2-3 people. Cooks in all weather. You can see a shadow it can cook Cool

When I get too old to portage and base camping is
all that's left, I could see having one. Maybe for emergency use too.

I don't think there's much of a prayer of it happening any sooner.  Folks I talk with in Ontario (as well as their radio stations I stream) indicate THEY don't want the border opened anytime soon.  I can't say I blame them.  One of my outfitter friends tells me that he will not run "truck shuttles" this year under any circumstances, regardless of where his customers come from (if they come).

I hold 2 Quetico permits, the 1st is for a June 22nd entry.  I've already given up on that and have made other plans. My second permit, also for Quetico, is for a late July entry. While I am somewhat more hopeful about it's prospects, I still have a Plan B.

I hope the U.S. Forest Service will follow suit with the Minnesota governor's decisions as he relaxes his stay at home restrictions as they apply to camping... though I cannot say I fully understand the implications of his announcements made yesterday. I'm hoping for clarification today. I think there is a shot that the BWCA will open in June.

We'll soon see.

Be safe!

Much of the goods in CAN are shipped east-west by truck, maybe more than even the US.

I would wager you go to any CAN truck stop ( US too) and you'll find plenty of CAN who fuel those long drives with less say " diet pills"  Wink Grin Grin

Those truckers stop at rest stops all along their routes. The eat/shower and interact with plenty of people every trip. One Covid-19 infected trucker could do a lot of damage.

Huh.  So this mask will be ready June 2020.  How many will be available and what will they cost?  Warranty?  We can't even produce/procure enough "dumb" N95 masks for our front-line workers, let alone we in the masses.  Now we're to expect millions and millions of these "smart UV" N95 masks?  Too good to be true me thinks.  I know.  Call me a huge skeptic.

Not everyone needs an N95 mask just like not everyone needs a Covid-19 test. The healthcare workers use up the available masks at a far faster rate than a civilian would.

Get them this mask and that frees up millions more for the people who feel they need them.

Just an FYI folks... if you plan on heading into the BWCA, "technically" speaking, you can ONLY camp remotely as a "family group."

Hopefully, this restriction gets amended before long.  Outfitters are loaded with mostly "mixed groups."  How they intend to sort it all out should be very interesting.

I think the official order is "single household use,” not family group.  Not sure I know intent but seems more spinnable.

While I would not want to go with people from all over, i can imagine a group from same neighborhood is probably ok. At a doctor visit a few weeks back i asked about local cases. None except a "prominent" family had a party and one of them had just returned from Florida and whole family was diagnosed with covid19. So I cant imagine camping with even just my son from Chicago. I don't need it. So since my wife's idea of roughing it is La Quinta, i guess I'll solo.

And what im really curious about is the overall impact of the pandemic on BWCA and QPP use. Wiil they be busier because season is shortened? Will they be less busy because of economy, loss of income, etc?  Will fear of infection supress use? Might, heaven forbid, the Ely Steak House and Brittons not reopen?  I'm suspecting quite a bit of permit availability due to uncertainty and changes in plans, but who knows.

Minnesota restaurants can reopen at 50% capacity on June 1. One of the primary concerns is that the closest trauma center (ventilators) is at Duluth. As you might know, emergency extraction is quite difficult and expensive and places the rescuers at risk.

BillConner,

You're quite right, the definition is "single household."

I can now tell you that Forest Service specifications to outfitters do NOT include any reference to this consideration.  MY understanding is that outfitters intend to proceed with a "business as usual" approach.  The individual whose shuttle service I will be using has spoken with the Forest Service and has heard nothing to contradict this.  A BWCA/Quetico fishing guide I know is proceeding with "mixed parties", clearly NOT within the same household.

I guess we'll find out what is actually "enforced" within a few short weeks... hopefully in time to secure additional permits, IF they prove necessary.

So much confusion....

The RABC program was suspended on May 12 and the suspension remains in effect until further notice. It will be in effect until Canada reopens it’s border with the US. This means that even if you have a permit, you are not allowed to cross the border. FYI.

I don't think USFS will enforce much pandemic related once in wilderness. I do think and hope that outfitters are not really business as usual for their sake. Minimize contact with customers, extra cleaning of premises and gear, no lodging, etc. And i assume premium or surcharges on food.  But not at all business as usual.

I got a call from the RABC folks about 10 days ago. They basically informed me that they would be holding my application until the border opens and then process it. If it doesn't happen by the time I'm supposed to be in Quetico, they won't process at all. He said they were hopeful that the border would open fairly soon, but of course, made no promises.

I think i misinterpreted the household statement. As i posted elsewhere, the campsites are for single household use. The campsite is not for multiple different groups. Nowhere does it say all people in the campsite have to be from same household or family. At least that's how i see it now.

Hate to rain on your parade, but:
According to the governor's order, "Dispersed and remote camping sites for single household use."

Would seem to mean that those who occupy a site must all be from the same household.

I think it says the campsite is for single household use, which is consistent with the same order allowing guided trips as long as its a small group (guide plus 2 guests? Iirc). They don't want people using campsites intended for multiple households.

Could be a non-camping lawyer's wording.

So everyone in the group spend the night together at someone's house before the trip.  It does not say how long they have to be part of the household.

Our homeonwer's association has run into an issue with the fact all our homes are defined to be for single-family use only.  Trouble is single-family is not defined.  Here is how the county defines it.

Quote:
One  or  more  persons  occupying  a  single  dwelling  unit,  provided  that  unless  all members are related by blood, marriage, adoption or guardianship, no such family shall  contain  over  six  (6)  persons,  but  further  provided  that  domestic  servants employed  and housed  on  the  premises  shall  not  be  counted  as  a  family  or families.

Just decide ahead of time which ones in the party are the servants. Smiley

Agreed re: applying proper precautions.  I secured such assurances from my outfitter.

My point was that my outfitter & a guide friend of mine "understand" from their discussions with Forest Service personnel that their clients need not come from a single household.  Frankly, I've challenged them on that assumption and secured their assurances that they will secure an additional permit for my party (before they run out) should the single household rule be applied by the forest service. Fortunately, I still have a few weeks to actually witness how the rule is either enforced or not.

Luckily, there are but two of us and we could even camp at nearby different sites on different permits if they really got picky.

About all we can do is to wait and see how the process plays out.

Can someone quote or link to the language that says the people on a group have yo be from a single household or the same family? I have not found it - ihave only found the language qualifying the campsites (which is consistent with reported outfitters claim).

According to our governor Walz, we are now able to assemble in groups up to 10, starting tomorrow. That can include family and friends. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. Wink BWCA allows 9 on a campsite. Not aware of any language defining composition of occupation. Cool

You can find official text at: EO 20-56 Final_tcm1055-431921.pdf

It says:

Notwithstanding
Executive Orders 20-04, 20-08, and 20-18, the below facilities are permitted to be
open and do business, provided that they adhere to paragraph 6 of this Executive
Order and the Outdoor Recreation Guidelines available at DNR’s website
( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links))

And in that list is:

Dispersed and remote camping sites for single household use. A dispersed campsite is a single campsite, not in a developed campground, used for overnight camping. A remote campsite is a designated backpack or watercraft campsite, not in a developed campground, used for overnight camping. Both private and public developed campgrounds remain closed to recreational camping.

Nowhere does it say the up to 10 (9 in bwca of course) people staying on that site have to be from a single household. I did see a journalist who interpreted such.

What other possible meaning do you interpret the phrase "remote camping sites for single household use" besides " to be used by members of a single household".?

Something I'm not seeing?  "Nowhere does it say the up to 10 (9 in bwca of course) people staying on that site have to be from a single household." As a native English speaker I have to say that is exactly what it says.

Its defining a type of campsite that is permitted to be open.

Definition of household: a house and its occupants regarded as a unit.

Nothing about family. In this case, its a campsite and its occupants regarded as a unit. No different than if you and others started living in the same house - you are now a household.

I'm done. You can have last word.

I listened to the governor's press conference. It was clear in the conference, as it is clear in the description, that a campsite, if it is to be shared, should be shared by people who are members of the same household- eg people that live together. Family is not mentioned.

The phrase "dispersed and remote camping sites for single household use" is not defining the campsite- it is defining the use (for single household use)  of a campsite- answer: a single household. The type of campsite is defined in the next sentence- eg "a dispersed campsite is a single campsite....." A household is a group of folks who live together in a somewhat extended existence. If the defined group was a "single party of campers" the term "party" or "group" would be used. There is no previous reference in the history of camping regulations that refers to a group of campers as a "household" (the word is defined as living within the same physical structure)- the choice of word and the modifier "single"  should make the meaning obvious.

Nowhere in the Forest Service announcement does it restrict the makeup of the parties. In the governor's announcement it clearly does- you can interpret however you want but it is clear that the governor wants people who camp together to be people who live together- to interpret any other way is be be deliberately obtuse.

For what it's worth, the wording of this Star Tribune story on 5/16/20 (see: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) ) has given some folks "heartburn."  If the Forest Service AND the state are truly "aligned", then there should not be a discrepancy with respect to "make-up of parties." Yet, on the surface, it would appear there is room for differing interpretations.

My outfitter friend, at least, is in wholehearted agreement with Solus.  He has seen nothing in the regs nor heard anything from the Forest Service that suggests the make-up of his parties must change.  Likewise, my guide friend tells me, "as long as no one in your party is sick, you should be OK."  Of course, these could well be self-serving interpretations.

Like others, I'll be watching closely to see what actually gets enforced so as to end any confusion.

I just found THIS interpretation which seems to spell it out fairly clearly: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

In case you cannot open that link, here is the pertinent text: "Can I start planning my camping trip?

Yes, but only if you’re planning to camp at a dispersed or remote campsite. That means camping in places like the Boundary Waters, where you must backpack or take a watercraft to get to the campsite. And those outings are still restricted to 'single household use,' meaning you can camp with family members but not with friends yet. Developed private and public campgrounds are still not allowed."

Hmmm, I shall wait & see....

It also says that vulnerable adults should stay home and shelter in place. He defines that as anyone 65 or older. If I was a betting man, I would bet that the outfitters/guides will take your money and not ask any questions. I also think You’ll have a better chance of seeing Sasquatch than seeing anyone coming to your campsite to ask questions. Life is all about risk management and mitigation. We’re all adults and don’t need a nanny...

"Should" sounds like a recommendation.

"Restricted" sounds more like a regulation.

Since I understand $1000 fines are possibly involved, I, for one, am pressuring my outfitter to get to the bottom of apparent discrepancies.

Mainly, I just don't want permits for my entry point & date to run out if it turns out that the law dictates that campsites are restricted to family members.  If THAT happens, I'm looking to Wally13 to quickly "adopt me."  I think he's older than me by a couple days or so; maybe no one will notice.

So, being that close in age, I'm guessing you can't pass yourselves off as half-brothers.

I agree with OS - re: Sasquatch, but I'm bringing some Jack Links just in case....not so much on the 'we are all adults'.....well, technically maybe.... Shocked

I'm on the forgiveness side of the forgiveness/permission continuum.  From a legal-ese perspective, officials have to say certain things to avoid potential litigation and to be able to say 'we told you so....'  In practice, uncommon sense should prevail.  I think Uncle Magic and I will be just fine.

As for usage....looking at permit availability, I think there will be a mix.  There's those of us that have been Jones'in to get out and will take whatever wilderness paddle fix we can get - I think you'll see that pent up demand open up, plus all us Quetico'ers that can't cross the border (I'm not pushing the forgiveness thing THAT far....) are opting for the BW.

On the other hand, many of the youth group trips are not happening.  Scouts BSA summer camps are getting cancelled, High Adventure trip pushed out or cancelled and the like.  I'm sure other youth org's and churches are facing the same issues - like safely staffing and training staff before campers show up.  Plus, Ma said ya' ain't going.  I think you'll see very few youth groups, at least early in the season.

And youth groups and activities being canceld isn't just canoe trips.  Here in Ohio, almost all upcoming high school summer sports camps are either canceled, postponed or on hold....football, basketball, etc.  Noone knows what's gonna happen to fall sports in the high schools, let alone classes....it's a big unknown mess...

I haven't been to the BWCAW for over 30 years because I prefer Quetico.  I have probably made about 10 trips to the BWCAW, but never did particularly well fishing.  I did like the canoe rest stops and even the signs were ok.  I wouldn't know where to go and where to fish any more.  I have been debating if I knew Quetico would be closed for the season would I go to the BWCAW as a second choice.  Right now I think I would defer going to the BWCAW.

Yup, the BWCAW is all fished out. No reason to go there. If you caught anything, it would likely be an invasive species like Quetico carp...

I'd agree but there have been rumblings that it might extend into July. It will depend on how we are doing that will partly influence that decision. There's only a little movement from the provincial governments about re-opening.

It seems likely they may require a 14-day self-quarantine if and when they do open. My guess is it will be extended to July 21 at least. If so, I'll start making Plan B just in case.

Marry or adopt a Canadian. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Otherwise no change and not optimistic it will end June 21.

I expect on June 19 we'll hear it's closed until July 21, and that we won't know any more than that. I hope I'm wrong.

+1   BTW, my grandnephew, who is accompanying me into WCPP in August, is married to a Canadian Citizen.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can pass as their child.

Yes, but not all provincial parks are even open to all Canadians. The word is that it'll probably be extended to July 21. Even if they open after that to non-essential travel (which I doubt now), I expect they'll keep a 14-day self-quarantine, which would effectively squash my plans.

But I haven't given up all hope. Maybe mpeebles grandnephew could adopt us. Just because we're a lot older doesn't mean he couldn't does it . . . ?

I was thinking more along the lines of "caregiver".  We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I can't help thinking how quiet the southern Quetico will be this year.  All those spawning bass on their beds with only real flies on the water above.  All those abused campsites sprouting patches of grass.  I wonder if the Yellow Brick Road portage at the Bayley Bay beach will see anyone except a ranger or trail crew this year? Anyone know what the guide Stu Ostoff (of the Boundary Waters Journal) is going to do?

TomT,

From what I understand, Stu is taking his scheduled Quetico parties (those still interested in his guided trips) into the BWCA.  He seemed uncertain regarding how many of those parties will still go.  When I last spoke with a member of his staff (near the end of May), Stu was scrambling trying to get ready for one such "BWCA-converted" trip.  I believe they were headed into the Lake Agnes/Oyster Lake region of the park.  Whether the trip actually materialized, I do not know.

It's a tough planning year no matter how you look at it.

If I knew that Quetico would not open this year, I would plan a trip into the BWCAW.  I might even enjoy going there again after a 30 years plus absence.  It would be interesting to see how much it has changed.  The big down side is that I would have to find new fishing spots.

I just read an update that authorities are planning to extend the closure at least into late July. The Canucks are very concerned about the spread in Toronto, Montreal, and British Columbia.

A recent poll of Canadians indicated that 81% favored keeping the border closed indefinitely due to the pandemic. Doesn’t look good for this year.

Take heart!

I don't know if it stops the Covid, but at least for me, when I eat it, especially the pickled variety, people WANT to social distance from me.

Add in a few beers and the 6 ft becomes 12.  Wink Grin Grin
