2021 Trips into the Wild

This is my foolish optimism getting the better of me. I'm intending to get a June or late May trip into McAree next year with a buddy who's a bit less mobile but might be up for a Mark Anderson tow and drop off at Black Robe portage. I've never been but I thought it would be a nice easy trip with possible day trips into Iron or elsewhere. If we have Copia in the Spring, I'll give more details for anyone who might be in the area at the same time.

Post your wildly-optimistic trips for next year in this thread. The planning for these should get us through the winter! Wink

Can I start with a wildly optimistic pre-trip event?  One where I actually learn how to correctly use all of the features on my new-ish Garmin In-Reach.

As you know, we don't do wilderness canoe trips anymore, but we do go to the Canoe Country.  We have a cabin reserved at Rockwood Lodge for the last week of June, 2021, and we hope our granddaughter (who is now a freshman in college) will be going with us again.

We'll keep hoping that these and any of our future plans will come to fruition next year! It doesn't hurt to plan!

P.s. I'm still learning how to use my Inreach as well.

My plans are further east. Hoping to do several sections if not entire North Forest Canoe Trail.

Pretty sure I'll graduate from my Spot 2 to a sat phone to satisfy my spouse.  Hopefully a short learning curve.

BillConner,

Interesting.  Earlier this week, my brother & I discussed this same possible trip, though 2022 is more likely to be our year.

If I'm not mistaken, "the Allagash Waterway" in Maine is a prominent section of the North Forest Canoe Trail.  That 120 mile waterway was gorgeous and well worth paddling way back in 1979 when I did it.  If you do no other section of the NFCT, do THAT one.

A word to the wise: right in the middle, there's a very challenging 9 mile stretch called "Chase Rapids."  Believe me, you'll want the Forest Service to portage your packs & gear to far end should you decide attempt to maneuver your empty vessel through numerous Grade 3 & 4 rapids. I strongly advise availing yourself of that service if you elect to paddle it.

Anyway, the Allagash alone would be a great "alternative trip" in 2021 for anyone looking for such.  The first half is easy paddling on beautiful lakes in the shadow of Mt. Katahdin.  After a heart-in-mouth roller coaster ride on Chase Rapids, the balance of the paddling fairly straightforward on easy-flowing rivers and streams.  Finally, if you intend to fish, the whitefish bite was quite good throughout.

No doubt the area has seen changes in the 41 years since I was there but I can't imagine it being less than a wonderful wilderness paddling getaway.

Have fun with that one!

If the border is open we want to explore more in Atikaki. I always say I am done with early season trips but being in such withdrawal I need to get out there as soon as the ice skates are not needed. First trip would be to Wallace Lake and down the Wanipigow, up the Broadleaf and over to the Gammon River at Aikens Lake and take it to the Bloodvein and then up that river to the Sassiginnigak River. Upstream to a lake of the same name and a  long portage back to the Bloodvein and across the Tea Pail portage back to the Gammon and then head for the Obukowin Portages back to the Wanipigow. WOW, I feel better just after writing that out!!

Marten,  I do not even know where several of those places are located, and I would still rather be there, than here at my desk at work.

The places referenced are located west of Bissett, Manitoba.  The start and end portions are located in eastern Atikaki Provincial Park (Manitoba).  The middle section (Gammon, Bloodvein) are located in western Woodland Caribou Provincial Park (Ontario).

That is the best part, not many go to Attkaki PP in Manitoba because there is not good map available. I can fix that.
