A question for hammock aficionados.

So I read something today and my one braincell happened to touch the other ... causing a chuckle...

Funny you mention the starry night.... It was so black and I apparently was a little buzzed on the juice I was drinking that on my way back to my hammock, which was quite a ways through the trees, I made a wrong turn and stumbled into Magic Paddlers tarp lines over his hammock. I don't think I woke him.  Grin

Have any of you hammock aficionados ever been awakened by thunder in the middle of the night, while in your hammock? If so, did you imagine yourself as a filament in an incandescent light bulb? Or is that what the tarp over you is for?

Crack - Buzzt!   Grin

No but I have had my hand laying on the hammock and felt the thunder vibrate the hammock so much it tickled.

Thunder & lightning has never bothered me all that much in my hammock.  Rather, I am more concerned about becoming a piņata for a storm-driven tree, a bear seeking breakfast, or a moose on its morning stroll down to the water hole... the latter instance being something that nearly DID happen to me on Cirrus Lake at a camp near Sue Falls.

Since then, I've been more cognizant about avoiding straddling game trails with my hammock shelter set-up.

Jimbo, that's a nightmare scenario hanging over a game trail.  Gotta hope those moose are wearing their night vision glasses.

As for lightning - I think it would be curtains if either tree took a direct hit.  Not sure but I don't want to test it out.

If I remember correctly, that happened two nights in a row.  I was in a small clearing nearby and only had to hope that those heavy foot falls didn't land on my tent.

Yep, that was the trip.

You would think I would have learned to move my hammock somewhere else on Night #2....

AND, we hung around that campsite just long enough to witness an all-night rain so we could enjoy the complete ambiance of the Cirrus to Kas portage when it was soaking wet!

Is it possible to paddle a portage?

Ah, yes!  What a mistake, especially for me.  That was my pre-hip surgery trip.  DD practically had to carry me across that dang portage!

On the brighter side, I do recollect having one of the best afternoon hammock naps of my life on that windy midlake island on Kasakokwog!

I did something similar along Ruby and Hustler Lakes west side of the BW in 2012.  The area I'm talking about is consistently flooded now.  Most likely those dang super rodents and their handiwork.  Grin

Cache to Trousers and I was quite thankful for the flagging tape.

I thought so.

I know that this is a hammock thread so I'll mention that my teenage son has adopted my hammock for camping...and I probably won't get it back for awhile! Although I'm always curious about hanging instead of lying down in a tent. It's a weight consideration....

The whole hammock instead of tent idea never made sense to me for canoe camping.

That said, I have two questions.
#1 - Hammock, tarp, under quilt, ropes and whatever. What's it all weigh and how much pack space does that all that take up.
#2 - How long does it take to rig compared to a tent.

I mean, you can get tiny little one person tents, right? You wanna save weight and time just get a bivy sack.

Oh, and Buzzzt!  Cheesy

I had the same thoughts/questions....

Also, a couple of folks have told me they sleep better in a hammock, less aches and pains than from laying on a tent pad....

I like napping in a hammock BUT your personal sleeping style will have a big say in whether a hammock is for you.

I roll side to side, rarely sleep on my back. Put me in a hammock overnight and someone would have to untwist me in the morning!  Wink Grin Grin

You can always cut weight, figure the best/fastest way to hang a hammock. Before I spent the money for a good hammock and accessories, I'd see if I could borrow someone's set-up and spend a few nights in the backyard to see if it's for you?
