No matter how many times I see today's POD, I smile.  It was such a lovely day, and I asked him to pose.  We did two shots, one with the bottle and one without (to share with his tee-totaling family members.)  During those early days we took our blackberry brandy in a Colgate 100 bottle.  It was a nice size and was plastic, had a good-sealing lid.  We aren't big drinkers, so a bottle like that was enough for sipping on an 8-10 day trip.

It was early in the trip, so his cut-off wheat jean shorts and his Camp Easton Staff t-shirt were still semi-clean.  Seemed like a good time for a portrait sitting on a friendly Quetico rock.   Smiley

One of my 2020 quarantine-year projects was to make books on Snapfish of several of our early canoe trips that had no book.  I had to go through piles of old snapshots, none of them labeled, and transcribe notes from my little spiral notebooks that I carried in my waist pack on the trips.  Ended up doing three books, one of our 22-day BW trip in 1992(it had a photo album but that was getting fragile) and two other books that included five "down memory lane" canoe trip reports.  It was sort of a tedious project as it meant scanning and tweaking lots of old, poor-quality photos, but it was also fun.  And I am glad to have the finished products now.  Keepers?  Yes.

The question is:  what do you do with a whole box of those little spiral notebooks with the original trip notes?  Precious to only us.  Nothing our children will cherish when we are gone.  But hard to discard, too.  So many memories.  We downsized a lot when we moved here seven years ago, but not THAT much.  It still needs to be done.

Write them up as trip reports for your website? Send the link to your grandkids and let them comment! They will see how cool their grandparents are Smiley

This continues to be an enjoyable series of early trip pics, Spartan2!  Really makes me wish I had discovered the park back in those years so I would now have a few of my own.

Thanks for sharing!

I had a lot of experience in canvas tents in the Army.
My first and last experience with them was when 4 of us went on a trout fishing trip in the UP of Michigan.

One of the guys said he had access to a canvas tent big enough for all of us. We camped on state land, down a muddy/rutty 2 -track to a remote trout stream.

I borrowed my brother's 4x4 for the trip to get us deep into the woods. We go to set up the canvas tent and find that it had been packed away WET!!  Tongue Cry Grin

It was full of mildew and nasty looking, to say the least.  We ended up using it as a tarp and slept under it. Worked great except it was Black Fly time in the woods. Without a tent to retreat to we had to lather the DEET on, the go-to bug dope of the time.

The fishing was great and we had plenty of beer to drown our misery in.  Wink Grin Grin

I hated this tent.  It was smelly.  It was dark.  And Spartan1 told me if it was wet and I touched the side that it would then be wet INSIDE!  I was so paranoid about touching the side!   Shocked

He would close it up and spray a "bug bomb" inside before we were going to inhabit.  Don't remember a real bug problem with it, but since we had rain off and on for several days on our six-day trip, it was never really feeling (or smelling) dry.

That's Spartan1 in the background of the photo, chopping branches off a dead tree for our fire.  Probably the campsite at Myrtle Falls on the Namakan River, if I remember right.

Before our second trip we bought the orange nylon tent.

By the way, thanks for the compliment, Jimbo.  It has been fun looking at some vintage canoe country photos this spring and summer, but I also have a few from our recent trip to the Gunflint that I need to get ready to send.  They won't be fuzzy like these.

Still, having photos to bring back the memories of spending time in the canoe country for more than 50 years is a treasure, regardless of the quality, I guess.
