I was always very disappointed in this photo.  At the time I didn't know what a dolmen is, and when we paddled by it, I just snapped a quick photo that isn't really very well in focus.

Dolmen:  (per Merriam Webster)
: a prehistoric monument of two or more upright stones supporting a horizontal stone slab found especially in Britain and France and thought to be a tomb

Later on I heard that there are people who actually paddle the Kelso River specifically to see and photograph the dolmen, and find it fascinating.  We were clueless.  I just thought it was intersting and whenever I see something interesting I take a photo.   Roll Eyes  We might have stopped, and I might have done a bit better if I had realized that it had some conversational significance.

We are leaving on a cruise Thursday.  Will be sailing through the Panama Canal and then spending 9 more days in the western Caribbean.  I am sure I will see many interesting sights and snap more photos.  Because of my neck issues and also to save bulk and weight for the flights, I will not be taking my larger camera equipment.  Hopefully the little Nikon waterproof camera will do OK and I will have at least a few images that I like.

Alas, all I see a glacial erratic. Funny what people read into things. Now if there were some Knights Templar carvings on it, well...

I guess if you get out and walk around it, the big rock is supported by three smaller rocks and you can see light underneath.  We didn't do that, though.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

They call it the Viking Dolmen, and I don't think the Knights Templar were big in Viking lore.   Wink

Obviously I wasn't super-impressed, as I didn't get out of the canoe to take pictures anyway.  But it does catch your eye as you paddle by on a quiet river.

My first look at that erratic/dolmen was that it looked like a manatee getting ready to munch on a piece of food....on second thought, maybe not....

Prized targets for the ancient Anishishanabe, those Canadian manatees!  I was paddling around their Florida cousins just last week and I can clearly see the family resemblance in that dolmen.

By the way, PK, just how strong ARE those painkillers your surgeon put you on?

So, I haven’t checked the POD for a year or so (sorry for my tardiness) and happen to look today and see my photo on Alice Lake. Someone (Spartan2?) must be sending me psychic brain wave messages.

Regarding dolman, we had lunch on table rock on our canoe this year. I love glacial erratics and think about the forces that delivered them to there location.

That's funny, Karl!!   Grin  I actually DID send you psychic brain waves this morning when I saw that you had the POD--I said to myself, "Boy, I wonder if Karl knows he has the POD today."  I thought about contacting you, but I didn't do it.  Or maybe I did, but it was just on another plane.   Roll Eyes

I love the rocks, too.  We stayed overnight at the Table Rock campsite many years ago.  It has good vibes.

And that Alice Lake shot today is lovely.  I specialize in reflection shots myself, and I do like to appreciate a nice one.   Smiley

Thanks Spartan2,  I don’t know how to do the quote thing. I just know how many times that I call someone on the phone and they say, “I was just thinking about you!”  It’s eerie! Smiley.

One really neat rock display is a ~50 foot tall vertical pillar of Gunflint Iron Formation on the magnetic rock trail near Gunflint lake. I reminds me of the pillar in the 2001 space odyssey.

Today’s POD is Alice Lake to the south. The Pagami Creek fire burned just south of there (in 2011?). I’ve canoed there since then and it’s like a war zone going in in some spots.
