At Wally13's behest, I am attempting to shrink & paste HIS pic of a smallie (allegedly) harvested in Kawnipi Lake in Quetico.  If successful, I'll defer to Wally13 for the actual tale (yarn?) behind this (photoshopped?) pic.

Thanks Jimbo for posting my picture. I wasn’t sure how to shrink down a photo so I could post it on QJ.

I found an old pic of a huge smallie my brother in law caught in Kawnipi back in the early 1980’s. We were trolling live crawler spinner harnesses ( back when live bait was legal) with bottom bouncers in 10-25 ft of water on a 4th of July trip. We came to a sharp drop off of 40 ft and abruptly turned my MN II to get back to shallower water. Just then this big suspended smallie hit and the battle was on.

We thought it was a big walleye,  but then it did a high jump as smallies usually do and then we knew he had a smallie. It was huge with immense length and girth.  He landed it and I snapped a photo with one of those old portable Kodak cameras. We had no scale or tape measure with us. So we will never know it’s exact weight and size. But my brother in law stands 6’2” and weighs 240. So you can use his size as a reference point as to how big that smallie was.

Can’t wait to get back up to Quetico in 2023 and enjoy the wilderness with my fav paddling buds and fish for walleye, smallies and lakers.

That would be an incorrect conclusion. It is more impressive live and in person, as I’ve heard you tell the story. The picture is blurry so some may think it’s a hoax. It’s hard to tell how much lead this poor fish swallowed. Just kidding. Thanks for sharing this  Cool

LOL Old Salt … pic was taken with one of those cheap disposable Kodak Instamatic cameras we all used way back when.  That’s why pic is blurry.  My brother in law thought he had the Ontario record when he pulled it up out of Kawnipi.

That was one big smallie for sure BUT maybe some of the CIS computer members can find the exact length since we know your brother-in-law is 6' 2".

Then use this chart. It appears to be a very chunky fish, so the weight estimate would be on the heavy side?

Unfortunately, wearing that t-shirt invalidates the catch.

Just for giggles, I downloaded the GIMP photo-editing app to see if I could figure out the length of that smallie.

Way over my technical skills but using the known height of the man, I found that height in pixels. Converted pixels to inches.

Then I measured the fish. Did the same thing.

I might be way off BUT I get approximately 27.6 inches for that smallie. That puts it over 10 lbs.

Ontario record ( one I found) is 9.84 lbs and 24 inches. IF I did it right, that smallie is bigger than that or damn close.

Wally13,

What were you thinking?  It's been barely 103 years!  You expect us to swallow yet another Sox fraud so soon?

Hey, I got a very similar grainy shot taken with a Polaroid from back in the day.  I'll attempt to attach it to this post.  It's nowhere near a Ontario record, though.  I don't use conventional fishing poles to harvest the truly big ones.  Maybe ST can use his "pixels methodology" and size it up for me?

Later,

I tried but to get the BS pixie scale you have to PAY for the software.  Wink Grin
