This kind of a review and a hot deal alert for those in the market.
List price on this unit is $350, which is what many retailers are charging (Cabelas).
For whatever reason Amazon has this unit listed at $123(65% off) today, shipped and sold by Amazon. This is the split shot unit without the CMAP mapping chip. The 5" unit does have mapping capability though, including sonar recorded mapping (
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)). IMO the CMAP chart is not worth it for Canada, as many lakes are not depth mapped anyway.
Walmart.com also seems to have this unit marked down to $250 at the moment, which is a good deal too, but still twice that of Amazon.
I picked up one of these units over the holidays as an upgrade to my Hook 4 unit and have been pleasantly surprised. Current draw is around 300mA at full brightness. If I dial the brightness down two levels, current draw is only 220mA, but the screen is still plenty bright. 3X the draw of a B&W X-4 unit, but this unit is color and has GPS charting, so perhaps worth the extra battery weight depending on how you trip/fish.
I have been developing a custom map chart for Lowrance units for Quetico and the BWCA and will be offering it up for free very soon. The map does not have any depth contours, but serves as a base map for the free CMAP social map (
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) and also has campsites, portages, pictograph locations, fish species by lake and more. More details to come.
I have not used this unit on the water yet, but it seems to be getting good reviews:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)I thought I would give folks a heads up, in case any of you are in the market.
Edit, It looks like Amazon sold out at that price. Walmart.com still shows available at $250.
