Unless you're really careful to keep your hands clean every time you get them wet, you still risk getting sick. If you fish off the bank at camp, when you catch one your hand will get wet If you smoke or rub your face you're likely to pick up the dreaded bacteria. That was always my rationale for no filters. As I've gotten older, I just don't like to drink "stained" water any more. That's really about the only reason I even bother to filter. Good luck.
