Times change. Reasons for going change. Generations ago you wouldn't be planning a trip into the area unless you were close by anyway. Then you'd talk to people first hand. You probably wouldn't be going for recreation either -- probably related to making a living. You may not be excited about going. It was dangerous. You may have much perferred staying in town. Then you'd have to have exempliary woodsman's skills. Now you just need a credit card.

Times change. Now is the time of internet research and purchases, and traveling the wilderness for recreation. That's OK. We also get modern medicine.

You said, "May the wind be at your back and all your portages down hill." I bet those parting words haven't changed much, though many of us may wish the words spoken at the campfire rather than an internet forum. (sigh)
