My personal opinion is that it's a wonderful idea. I'd rather travel solo any day!

If you're not comfortable with the mechanics of it, start out slowly; day trips, then weekends, then something longer.

Some people need companionship and other thrive on slitutde. I guess I fall into the latter category. I do enjoy trips with two or more people.

The only drawback is that you need two canoes; I don't know of any one boat that is suitable for both solo and tandem tripping. A lot of the other gear, particularly a tent, is not really all that interchangeable either, although I've been known to carry my four-man tent on a solo trip.
