A thought your post brought to mind, Bob, is double soloing. Going on a trip with a partner, both in a solo canoe. Then you need only own one canoe - a solo.

This gives someone the opportunity to learn solo tripping techniques like paddling a solo canoe. It is actually MUCH easier to have a conversation with your partner in two solos than one tandem. You can take solo day trips knowing that you have someone who knows where you are and when to expect you back (today -- not in a week). You have a partner to help with the camp chores. The more I think about this, the better I like it.
