I have camped on two islands and frankly loved it...the idea of a bit more breeze holds true in my experience, we had far less bugs on the islands and yes, we caught northern and walley from shore. The fire wood thing was a problem...had been picked over pretty good and in four trips up north...have yet to see a bear. If bears are your main concern...understandably so...check the camp site for bear sign, claw marks on trees, fur on trees from rubbing, scat and if the camp site is a mess, lots of litter, etc...move on, keep an immaculately clean camp site and kitchen and don't sleep near where you cook and eat and I never travel up there without bear spray.
