Re: Alone in the Forest

I do a good amount of my camping/paddling solo. The main reason is that I have the time that some of my friends don't. Almost half of my trips will be solo. I am planning a trans Quetico solo this summer - two weeks.
I have done two weeks solo before in the Smokies but the park is busy and you are never alone. I am a serious dirtballer but I always take a few luxury items along - good book, cigars, sipping whiskey. I also don't skimp on sleeping arrangements. I use a Eureka Alpine Light two man tent versus a bivy. I want to be comfortable at night and if I get layed up I don't feel so closed in. Being alone takes time (and supportive wife). There is a huge difference between a weekender and a week but the rewards are tremendous. There is a certain spirituality and peace being alone. I was out this weekend ice fishing and watching the full moon. It wasn't Quetico but damn close.
