Re: Combined solo idea

Natureman,
Call Voyageur Canoe Outfitters (Mike and Sue Prom are the owners).
I've used them on my last 4 trips - if I visit Quetico from the Gunflint, I won't use any other outfitter. Tell them Skip Guyer and the Andersons recommended them.

Beware the convection wind on Saganaga - it starts at about 10:30 and doesn't quit till past sundown. Expect to paddle on one side of the boat for quite a while unless you're heading into the eye of the wind. (I've paddled solo several times across Cache bay goiing into Quetico - it can be an adventure).

Consider the Knife Lake trip - once you get around American point (you can get a motor tow to American Point), you're pretty well protected from wind). And, it's got some traffic - if you're solo and need help, it's a nice safety net.

You can't easily get to the S-chain from Cache Bay - you'd need to go thru the Falls Chain, Kawnipi and Agnes, then over to Silence from Agnes.

2 thoughts:
1. GET A MAP (Fisher, Mackenzie, etc), and don't go solo without one!!!
2. Consider what can happen if you're solo and the water temp is < 60 degrees. Know your limitations - if you're not 100% sure you can do it, DON'T.

I went solo in the Churchill River last August: I didn't run any of the fast water, even if I was sure I could make it. I took a map even though I was only 3 miles from the major hiway in that part of the world (2 lane dirt road) and could hear traffic from my campsite.

There's no 911 put there: if you're solo and you're hurt, you could be dead.
