My preference for portaging footwear is hightop canvass tennis shoes. I get adequate traction on most portages and good ankle support. The tennis are ok to get wet but preferring to keep dry, I like to wear 18" lightweight rubber overshoes over the tennis on wet portages and for loading and unloading my kevlar canoe. I wear another pair of tennis in camp again combined with the overshoes during wet cold weather. Oh Yea - the tennis must be hightop canvass Converse Allstars - RED!
