db: You really tripped a trigger for me with this topic. I have previously used mostly the USGS (U. S. Geological Survey) or Canadian equivalent (DEMR, Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources.) maps for their accuracy and additional layers of information. I'd never take a trip without one, but I have come to realize that the commercial maps sometimes provide additional information on portage location and length. The government maps can be purchased on paper or Tyvec (which is waterproof). Since the government maps provide a lot of information that is helpful for orientation, I have never been lost with them and a good compass. The commercial maps sometimes have useful topographic information, which is copied from the government maps. I'd recommend using both, and also a set of areal photos and satellite photos, too, for those wanting the full, earth-mapping experience. If you are experienced, you can get by with anything. If I had to pick just one, it would be the governent maps (or maybe the photos, which all the maps are derived from.). ...Tom Posted by Tom Swulius on March 31, 2000 at 03:20 In reply to: Map preferences posted by db on March 29, 2000 at 02:18 |
