Fish aren't color blind. I agree that the dark top/light bottom on lures could be counter-productive however. Maybe that's why some of the lures with a Blaze orange belly work so well. That is also why they recommend black lures on the surface at night. I believe I read somewhere that is is the light/dark flashing of the side of the lures that triggers a lot of fish. Let us know how your little experiment works out. It gives you an excuse to fish anyway. "I'm not out here to have fun Dear, I'm just doing a scientific experiment. Really!"
