We made the trip! We went in from the Moose River Lot - It's a long portage to the river - 169 rods I think. You get to paddle about 10 minutes then a portage. It's a narrow stream, probably tough to take in August! We headed out thru Oyster, Rock and Green to Gebeonequet. The portage were rugged, lots of up and down, quite a few deadfalls too. The lakes were great in that area, pretty deep and isolated. The route features river travel on the Oyster, a pretty stream. By the way, forget about "cutting the corner" and going up the Oyster from the Nina Moose River - you've got to go thru Agnes. The route into LaCroix from the Oyster was beautiful, with kind of a portal between high rock shores. We did not experience any boat traffic, in fact that weekend we only saw people on the portage from Rocky to Gebeonequet (2 parties!). Coming back down LaCroix, we did the portage routine to Agnes (my buddy caught a 5+ pound bass in one of the pools below the rapids and released it after the picture) We ran into a fire on Agnes. It wasn't big, so we staopped and used our dry baga to haul water. The wind was very strong from the SW and we couldn't get it out so moved on. About 1/2 hour later came the cavalry - tankers, copters, float planes, etc. That area is very dry, I hope rain comes. We camped on Gebeonequet ( the campsite on the left, there's a huge boulder there, great morning sun) and on La Croix on the S tip of the island facing Tiger Bay (beautiful elevated campsite with a jumping rock), finally on Nina Moose, 2nd site on the right down from the river from Agnes (another nice high rock, great breezes) Saw no animal life to speak of except tons of eagles. Saw one group when we were on the way out. All of the sites had plenty of wood - I had expected them to be barren like the sites N of Kawishiwi. You should have great paddling. The creeks are sheltered and time can be made. Good luck! Posted by Randy on May 19, 2000 at 23:12 In reply to: Re: North of Nina Moose posted by Jerry on May 17, 2000 at 00:15 |
