I've seen a few wood strips on top of cars in the North Shore area but never seen one in use in the BWCA - except my own. My tandem has been on one trip and my solo on two trips and as said on other posts, the only damage has been scratches (some of them deep) that had to be sanded and re-varnished after the season ended. I take reasonable care with mine but I don't pamper them. A good cedar strip will paddle as good or better than any you can buy and is lighter than most.
