I used to carry a compass along with the maps, but never used it so finally decided it wasn't on the "must-take" list anymore. I find enjoyment in paying attention to the lake, the islands, the shorelines, the landmarks, etc. as I paddle down large lakes. I personally like it because I feel more a part of things, a little more hands-on with navigation and knowing where I am.
I've never owned a GPS, but I think I would miss the old-fashioned way if I ever tried it.
