I would never consider useing a GPS as a sole means for navigation. (well maybe if you didn't want to make it back to work for a week or so. hummm)
I have used a GPS and a map and compass just for learning experience. It usually ended up stuck away in a pack afer t a short period of time.
I think that useing the map and compass keeps things interesting.
