I got so tired of breaking rods, even when they are tied to the thwarts, that I now carry them in a padded gun case. It is a bit cumbersome, but it holds rods and reels for 2 people, and my days of breaking them or rubbing a scratch in a rod to have it snap while fishing, are over. Of course I go to one place and make a base camp, so a little extra weight isn't an issue.
