I have no experience with Gore-Tex. Have you considered Frogg Toggs? http://www.froggtoggs.com

I've had mine about 1.5yrs. They are 100% polypropolene, 100% waterproof, 100% breathable, just over 1 pound and about $70. Feel like paper until you wash them a few times. DURABILITY may be an issue, but I treat my gear gently.

There is a 3M product for about $40 that feels like Frogg Togg. I saw it at Meijers (a MEGA-type store in Michigan and Indiana).
