I bought a North Face Mountain Light Gore-Tex jacket and used it as my rain jacket last year. We had alot of rain, and I can tell you it was incredible. You can find these on the net on sale for $199 rather than the list price of $360. Here's one place that carries them for $199:

I have never been so dry under such wet weather in all my life. Gore-Tex boots and Gore-Tex raingear make for a very happy camper.
