Re: Cache River

My brother and I did the Cache River just after the late ice-out of May '96. We paddled straight down from Cache lake. Can't tell you anything about the portage from Ferguson. Couldn't even find it - though we looked for it - as we passed by. That was a "high water" year, so the river was flowing real nice down to the Falls. We found good fishing down where the river spills into Kawnipi. Try throwing plugs into the base of the Falls around dinner time....

The river was terribly scenic and we swept right past a recently calved moose taking fledgling steps on spindly legs. I wouldn't be inclined to try Cache River much beyond June due to declining water levels. Others I compare notes with tell me that, in the last couple years, even May canoeists were running into low water. I'd say this year is promising due to current snow levels, but who knows....
