Re: a comfortable life jacket

We purchased Stearns inflatables (CG Approved Type III) prior to last years trip, and are very pleased with them. Although they don't provide the security of Types I or II, IMHO they make up for it in being comfortable so as to be worn all the time. They are not recommended for weak or non-swimmers

Essentially, they are fly-fishing vest with a "jerk to inflate" handle that activates a CO2 cartridge for inflation. There is also a manual inflation tube. The many pokets provide handy places to store all the stuff we want to keep close at hand. We do carry aspare re-charge kits.

I also like the BWJ a lot, but have to recognize that it suffers from hopeless inbreeding. Look through the last several issues and see if you can find an article by someone who isn't on the masthead as a contributing editor. There are way too may posed photos; in many ways, it presents itself like an outfitter's brochure. They would be well advised to encourage free-lance submissions by publishing a few, and bring in some fresh blood (with fresh perspectives).

What a great assesment! I love that analogy. Perhaps you should consider writing for BWJ!
