During our trip two years ago, we left the heavy plastic ground sheets behind. We had one night of rain and didn't have any problems. (We haven't had to deal with one of those continuous rain trips!! That would really test your positive mental attitude.) We decided that where you put your tent is more important than whether or not you use a ground sheet.
