Re: Launch at French Lake

I think I understand, but I've always seen lots of basecampers on it. The portage campsite always seems to be the only one available and is still really worn. One of the most beat sites I can think of off hand.

Anyway, that first island has the fond distinction for me to be the first place I ever found a shredded (green) day pack in the middle of nowhere. I wondered why and how it got there until not far away I came across some chewed and empty freeze-dried packaging. Ding ding ding! I totally understand the feeling about not wanting to look too hard for a stolen food pack and just getting the heck out of there...

If we're talking about the same island (heck either one) it's a short swim to it. (I've probably had a few short conversations with the area bear. He is a large male.) Hang 'em high. I know from experience islands aren't any safer. Actually even worse when you do get a visitor. They ain't big enough for the both of you. One of you has to leave.

It's got a nice cliff though and area nearer the Howards is pretty in the early morning and has that eagles nest. (At least it used to. It looked empty last time I was there.)
