This must have been one of those freaky things, or maybe just limited to wherever you were. I say this because this is when our group typically takes our first trip and we have yet to encounter anything as bad as you describe. The only time we had bugs was in '99 when it was hotter than hell right away and even then we did just fine. I know this probably did not help but try deet or headnets and give it a go again.
