The guy in the front ties a corner of a large tarp to the end of the paddle and raises it so the blade is on the seat. Then with the tarp gathering wind, sit on the free end of the tarp.
Actually it works much better with 2 paddles, but the guy in back needs a paddle to steer, so you would need an extra. Then you raise both paddles onto the seat and stand/step on the free end of the tarp.
If you can figure out how to tack with a canoe I'd like to hear about it. It only works with the wind at your back.

I have sailed Knife many times. The most memorable was 4 canoes lashed together, we sailed the entire length up the north arm. It was a blast. We even caught fish while trolling.
