RC, That's sound advice, thanks. We learned the hard way during a few years back on another "might be" Quetico portage over near Cache Lake. I temporarily "lost" the pack containing matches, compasses, and flashlights (yes, it was getting dark) on a rather dubious portage (ie. trail we blazed). For that matter, I temporarily lost my partner, too. It was a dark & scary fifteen minutes or so before we got lucky and recovered all the above. Since then, matches & compasses stay on my person and we "pass" on questionable trails as we approach twilight hours. Oh, yeah, these days we also ask around for Quetico portage advice in advance....
