I haven't been in that area but I would just like a say be very careful if you are going to attempt a portage that hasn't been used in a long time. Compasses sometimes can be affected by all the iron in the area and may not give a correct reading. Also, if you do attempt the portage be sure to take matches, some food, etc. Also, GPS units won't work in the woods, you need a decent clearing and even then they don't catch the sattelite signals very well.
