Mike, Better check with Quetico Park officials regarding the Cache River water level before heading out. You should still be OK in mid-June but it's best to be sure you won't be dragging bottom too much. The rapids on the river are not awfully bad. However, the area is so darned remote that you're not likely to see Help anytime soon if you "total" your canoe. We paddled a Royalex-made canoe to be on the safe side. If the water-level permits travel, don't give the alternative 2 mile portage a thought! Wildlife along the river is superb. Also, we found fishing below the Cache River falls at Kawnipi to be quite good in the early evening. There's a fine campsite right at the waterfalls. My guess is that Cache River will be the highlight of your trip. Can't tell you much about the Dawson Trail campsites other than they were mostly empty everytime I went through (usually early in the season). You shouldn't have trouble getting a site. Good luck. Pack your lake trout gear.... Jimbo
