Re: Racers Portages

Chief,

Thanks for the scoop on the Racers' Portages! I may actually get to apply the information in a couple weeks with my youngest son... plans aren't definite yet.

Chatterton & Split Rock Falls are especially neat in the Springtime when water is just bursting over rocks and fish seemingly chase your lure clear into the spray above. My brother & I had a great trip into that area back in 1996. There are several nice campsites around Chatterton Falls. We grabbed one on an island on Russell Lake in the bay just southwest of the falls. My brother - who, strangely enough, is ALSO nicknamed "Chief" - caught (& released) the biggest smallmouth I have ever seen not far from there. Just my luck that the only picture/evidence we have is of ME holding HIS fish....

If you're headed to that area, check out the BWJ Winter of 2000 issue for a story featuring Chatterton(p.26). If you do get as far as the Poet Lakes, I recommend investigating a scenic, island-studded beauty named Montgomery Lake. Like your experience on Gillnet, we wanted to linger but decided to blow through instead. They recently discovered some of the best pictographs in Quetico way up on the north end of Montgomery.

I'm afraid I can't tell you anything about the condition of the portage between Fern & Oliphaunt. I've never been through there. However, I bet you can get an update from some of the others who post regularly to this website.

I'm glad your trip worked out for you. I'm more-than-ready to be headed out myself. Maybe we'll cross paths one year....
