We crossed the portage from Olifaunt into Fern in Aug.2001. That was right after the big blow on July 31. Some people we met had told us that they had to do a lot of crawling under downed trees. With that advice we decide to split the portage and paddle the middle section. This did involve a short bit of off trail on a steep side hill, but my 5 and 9 yr old managed ok. The point is that by paddling the middle section we missed all the blow down. We thought the portage was going to be tough but after we were floating again everyone agreed that it was easy. The portage crew may have been in there since and so you should check at your entry point - they may know.
