Re: Stanton Bay recollections

Jim,

The quarter mile portage down to the Bay from the gravel road isn't bad at all. It is nicely planked & downhill most of the way to where you put in. Unfortunately, I've always gone the "other" direction; often it has been my exit point.

DB is absolutely right about the condition of the gravel road. I remember that the outfitter's kid who hauled us out of there was supremely proud of the fact he didn't bust the muffler - again - of the company station wagon (it was the only vehicle available at the time, so he was forced to go after us in it). I agree it'll take 30-60 minutes, depending on conditions, from the highway.

There are several nice campsites in that area. One is about two miles due west of the island that stares you in the face as you exit Stanton Bay (past the burned area). Just above the NW corner of "Long Island" are four smaller islands bunched together. The campsite on the SW island of that bunch is really nice, especially for a larger group. Also nice is the campsite on the east end of the island due west of "Emerald Island."

The big advantage as an entry point would seem to be avoiding east or west winds. You can island-hop your way to & from Pine Portage fairly easily, giving you pretty nice access to the upper Sturgeon Lake area in one long day's paddle.

May the breezes blow your way....
