MM's do ok in the heat if you keep them from getting crushed. Also, dark semi-sweet chocolate has a higher melting point than milk chocolate.

Seriously, the big issue with chocolate is melting. If you can keep it from melting send me your secret (winter camping does not count.) As far as how long it lasts, a lot longer than any permit will.
