Bears are excellent problem solvers. If they want something they will figure out a way to get it. A friend of mine is an animal trainer and last winter he had a black bear cub. I was amazed at what that bear could do. It was very smart and it would get frustrated if he couldn't do something and he'd keep trying untill he got it. Josh had gates up at all the doorways to keep the bear in the living room. He soon found out he could climb over the gates. Then Josh put electric fence wire at the top of the gates and the bear figured out how to climb over without touching the wire. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I also wasn't sure I believed it when I saw them. But they sure don't look faked when I zoomed in etc..., I think the one of him hanging with his front paws etc... was just before he fell.

Glad everyone enjoyed them. I sure got a kick out of them. It was actually one of my Dad's friends at the cabin that snapped the shots and passed them along. So I can't take the credit, what a laugh though, I can just picture walking back to my pack and a bear swinging on the rope like Tarzan.

You guys keep hanging your bear pinatta, if everybody hid their pack then the bears would become accustomed to it and it wouldn't work anymore. Although I have to admit after seeing those pictures maybe it would be worth it to hang just to see the show.
Nice pictures Furball---thanks for posting db.

Don't need to hang your food pack. Hang a pack filled with wood or something. Then you can still watch the show and not loose your food.

Amazing! I would have never believed a bear could climb out on a rope like that. Even looking at the pictures, I'm not sure I believe it.
It just goes to show you that if a bear really really wants something he will find a way to get it. I'll still hang my food knowing that old smokey will have to put more effort into getting it than just running behind a bush.

I've seen that bear before I think it was Ringling Brothers what an act. Furball how long did it take you to train that bear on the high wire? What a hoot! flp

FWIW - I still think hanging is better than hiding. If a bear this determined finds your foodpack, at least you can enjoy the show.
That is why I hang it. If they are going to get it at least they will have to hang 12+ feet from the ground and do acrobatics to get there. At least make them work for it.
Great pictures and that must of been some really strong rope/twine.
