Hey Vance,
I presume you are talking about going to the Swanson river or Swan Lake canoe area? I lived in Alaska for 15 years and that was where I first went canoeing! Great trout fishing and at the right time of year I hear killer Silver Salmon fishing! We have not taken a large group in to any of the parks before but I would recommend doing what Mat said and label the packages of food for each day and each person as this just makes it so much simpler. Good luck and do watch out for the Bears as we cam across a paw print in there about 11 Inches Wide not long! Smiley

Not quite clear what you are asking.  If by freezer bag meals, you're talking about dehydrated food in Zip-locks, that should be fine - except, who's gonna do all that dehydrating?  If you're talking about Mountain House Freeze Dried meals type of thing, that shoud work really well - get thier money up front, let each person select what they want for that meal and put in an order to REI.  When you get the food, write on each package, Day # --, and that person's name.  That way they can't complain about the choice for dinner (and you don't get stuck with the cost if they bail out at the last minute).  Breakfast should be easy - instant oatmeal will work for most.  Anybody that does not like oatmeal can do thier own thing - maybe cereal and some Milkman.

Lipton Cup-A-Soup may be old fashioned and hard to find in decent varieties anymore, but it is a great addition to any meal.  Lets the kids eat something hot while the rest of the meal is cooking, and supplements the liquids intake.  Likewise, I bring beef broth boullion, and alternate that with the Cup-A-Soup.

Part of my meal package is some kind of desert.  For a group of kids, instant pudding would work great.  Bring some pre-measured baggies of Milkman or Carnation - Mix in ziplocks by shaking, tie to a string and float in the lake till it sets up.

My experience working for an outfitter is all on river trips, where you don't have to portage, so its all fresh food, cooked on big stoves and 3 or 4 20# propane tanks for fuel, cooking for about 35 people on average, and sometimes up to 50 (and about a 150 on one school outing at a "camp").   If you want some ideas on that let me know.  But we usually do one day's breakfast with the oatmeal anyway.   Trouble with group cooking for a large group, is lots of clean-up, and you have to have big pots to cook in, which would be a pain on a wilderness trip ( and I personally wouldn't want to do real cooking in Griz country - your view may differ).

Last year I took our church youth group on a 5 day wilderness canoe trip (A first for all of us. I've done solo trips before but never group). There were a total of 10 of us. We split the food load up but served everyone individual portions of one large meal at breakfast & dinner.
This year I'm thinking about going to individual freezer bag meals at least for dinner, & possibly for breakfast too. Maybe an exception for a special night & morning. Our group size will probably be around 20 this trip.
Our country is mostly smaller lakes with decent portage trails up to 3/4 mile long, 9 in total, with a 14 mile slow river trip out. There is one planned layover day & enough slack for a second if we have wind or weather problems.
What has your exeperience been with meals for rips like this?
thanks.
