The same rule applies within the BWCAW:  two campsites require two permits ..... even for just one night (as in "initiations").

I go to Q with a group who enjoys being together very much.  However, the others prefer to base camp (and I don't mind it) but I also like to travel a bit.

Here's my question:  Could we be allowed to enter as one group at the appropriate entry point, then my son and I would split for a few days, make a loop and meet up with the others on the base camp lake?

My guess is this scenario would not be allowed.  To do so would require two permits.
