The group I canoe with had a similar incident happen where a friend had an epileptic attach, no life vest on our icy fall trips.  Fortunately they were able to save him.  Yes, I always wear a life vest.

Wow! Age of 27; that's distressing.

Use of a life jacket (especially at this time of year) should be standard procedure.
