Logging In
Once you have registered, or if you are returning to a site, you can login to the site.  In the menu bar on the forum you will find text that says "Login".  If it says "Logout" you are already logged in.  This can happen if you've already logged in before and chosen to have the forum remember who are you are.  This places a cookie on your system.  Once you choose "Login" you will be prompted for your user name and password.  If the combination is correct you will be allowed to navigate the forum as a user, rather than a guest.

Logging Out
If you are done browsing the forum you may decide to logout.  Perhaps you share a workstation with someone else, in this case you would want to log out of the forum upon leaving.  When you are logged in you will see "Logout" in the forum menu, select this and the forum will log your user name out.

Forgot Password
If you're trying to login to the forum but you forget your password or have lost it, you can retrieve it using the lost password tool.  On the login screen, next to the username field, it says "Forgot password?" Click this to be taken to the "forgot password" form.  Enter your username on this screen and press the Send button.  Your password will be sent to the email address registered to that username.

The log in never recognizes me.  I registered but the log in always says there is no one with that user name.  I'll re-register and everything looks fine.  The next time I come the same thing happens.  This is very frustrating.

Hi Bannock,

That would be frustrating...

I have one possible idea. The bottom of the register page has two radio buttons. (I Agree   and   I Do Not Agree)  You MUST select the "I Agree" button or you'll get dumped at the put-in without registering after clicking "Register". It doesn't give a error warning so you wouldn't get a clue it happened.

If you are successful the top right of every page will say "Hey, Bannock, you have x messages" instead of "Welcome, Guest"

Stuff happens. Try it one more time. If it still doesn't work let me know.

Duh!  I feel so dumb.  It worked.  Thanks.  The "I do not Agree" button is the default.  I guess I didn't specifically check the "Agree" box thinking that when I clicked "register now" I was also agreeing.

At any rate, I got it now.  Thanks for your help.

db,

So to change the cookie default I have to re-register?

I tried to change my profile but didn't see anything to "push".

I have often posted, I think, under guest just because logging in is a pain, (and I can't remember what name/password) I used.

No need to reregister unless you want to change your "User name" - The one you need to login. "Username" is carved in stone and you can always get your current password e-mailed to you at the current address in your profile.

The "Username" is the name you registered with It's basically the only thing you need to remember.

You can change your "displayed" name, password and e-mail address along with other settings in your profile. The button to save any changes is way at the very bottom of the page.

Your Username name is what everything is tied to. If you changed DL-North to DL South the displayed name on all your past posts (past and future) would change as well but your "Username" - the name you used to register - would still be used to login.

There is really no reason to logout. If you have software that deletes cookies periodically you would need to login after it does its thing. If you logout simply to remove your name from "users online" set the minutes to 5. Logging in and out again is only necessary if you share a computer.

Does that help?

db,

Hmmm, maybe, the system "remembered" me today. Don't think I did anything different.

I think it's the part about "not needing to logout" that is confusing. I would have thought that everybody would have to login/out each time, or the system would think everybody is always logged in.

Thanks,
Dan

I know if you check the "Always stay logged in" box, the cookies are set to expire in the year 2038. If you don't check that box they expire in a few hours and you need to login again once they expire or anytime cookies are deleted from your browser.

The "Minutes to stay logged in" is confusing. It's somehow remembered and used by the guts of the board. Setting it low has some effect on names in the "Users on line" display but it's not exact. Setting it to 5 seems to last 10 and using 120 seems more like 30. Guests are counted for a few minutes after their last click.

As far as logging in and out goes though, logging out deletes the cookies from your computer, your name from the online display and requires you to login to access member options again. If you check "always stay logged in" your name in the members online display disappears sometime after your last click and I believe the name of the most recent click is listed first.

Sad I recently discovered that my email address was incorrect in the member's profile. When I tried to change it I was logged off and cannot get back on with my username and password. Please let me in  Undecided
