Inserting links, pictures and smileys in your post

For obvious reasons standard HTML code cannot be used in posts. Instead QuietJourney allows the use of Bulletin Board Code in posts. Similar to HTML, but safe and standardized for bulletin board use.
Code
Type This...
[hr]
[url=http://site.com]LINKED-TEXT[/url]
[img]http://site.com/image.gif[/img]
[b]Bold[/b]
[i]Italic[/i]
[u]Underlined[/u]
[s]strikethrough[/s]
[color=Red]Red text[/color]
[move]stuff[/move]
 [quote]Quoted text [/quote]

And get this...

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Bold
Italic
Underlined
strikethrough
Red text
stuff
Quote:
Quoted text

Emoticons
Emoticons are a fun way to express your emotion in your posting. They can help you indicate whether you are joking, happy, sad, or a variety of other things. Each emoticon uses standard chat-style key-strokes, so it requires no thinking on your part.

Code
Type one of these...
:) :D ;D ;) :( :-* >:( :P :'( :-[ 8) :o ::) :-/ :-X ??? or ?!?

And get one of these...
Smiley Cheesy Grin Wink Sad Kiss Angry Tongue Cry Embarrassed 8) Shocked Roll Eyes Undecided Lips Sealed ??? or ?!?
Or check the box that disables smileys.

E-mail it to me. I'll put it in a folder and show you how to link to it.

It needs to exist somewhere on the web to be available. If you can't find another place to put it e-mail it to me. I'll put it in a folder and show you how to link to it.

I just noticed this topic had fallen to page 2.

Since people always have questions about this type of stuff, I'd put it near the top again...

Example:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Code
[url=http://inukshuk.godbdigital.com/gallery/]Inukshuk Photo Gallery[/url]

Always close the tag and there are no spaces in them even though it looks like there is one above. No quotes.

Could this thread be a "sticky" at the top of the forums?  I find myself always going back to it to cut/past the code.  I'm too lazy to learn it myself.

About 3 years ago, I printed out the code(s), cropped it and taped it under my keyboard.  Typing it in is really much faster than cut/paste.

Why can't I insert a picture in a post? I've been trying to use one from the Photo Gallery.

Open the image you want to post. Copy the url. If you want it to display in your post, put image tags around it.
Code
[img]http://inukshuk.godbdigital.com/gallery/albums/Jimboree-II-KF-pics/IMG_2885.sized.jpg[/img]

...produces this:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Pasting the url into a post will simply link to it.
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

If you want to get fancy:
Code
[url=http://inukshuk.godbdigital.com/gallery/Jimboree-II-KF-pics/IMG_2885?full=1][img]http://inukshuk.godbdigital.com/gallery/albums/Jimboree-II-KF-pics/IMG_2885.thumb.jpg[/img][/url]

...produces this:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Be sure to close every tag you open and they are nested properly.
Code
[url=location][img]location][/img][/url]
not
[url=location][img]location][/url][/img]

When I open the image that you used in the photo gallery and copy the url here is what I get
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
different than the url you got in the example and it will not work.
Why do your urls all have a .jpg ending?

Opening the image itself in a new window is the easiest way to get the URL of the image. Your URL is for the page.

On most MAC browsers it's "open image in a new window." (Option click and/or hold and wait for the menu - I forget what key command my right click adds)

In Firefox, (MAC or WIN) right click on the image and select "view image" or better yet "copy image location." Then you can just paste it from your clipboard.

In Windows Explorer, right click on the image and select "properties." You should be able to select and copy the image URL from that properties window.

I'm not very familiar with Windows. Perhaps someone knows an easier way??

Thanks db, it works. If I copy the url from the properties page I get the complete address including file type. I tried it (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and it worked fine.
I can't believe how much time I spent (wasted) figuring this out Cry

Bumping this up to the top.  I use this post a lot to cut/paste the code and it had slipped to the second page of the thread.

I tried linking to photos in a yahoo group some time ago & that didn't work either.  I signed up with photobucket (free at the level I needed) and that worked for linking pics in my last trip report.  I'm sure there are a bunch of free photo hosting sites like photobucket & I'm not even sure I remember that name right - maybe it's imagebucket...

YEAH! Grin

For those who are new at this, I signed on at photobucket.com. below each picture you post on their site, there is a URL link, HTML tag and an image code. I just copy the image code and paste it into my forum message and it magically appears.
