I have been reading a lot of posts regarding foil packed meats (e.g. tuna, chicken, burger, etc.). I am wondering if this meets park regulations. I thought the regulation stated something to the effect, "non burnable and/or non reuseable food containers". I realize that if you wanted to get picky, a lot of freeze dried foods come in packs that do not burn totally, but I'm just asking here.... Any insight would be appreciated.

Can you purchase these foil packs at your local grocery store? I have never really looked but am thinking of trying them this year.

state lands or waters within the BWCA shall have in possession any nonburnable food or beverage containers which are not designed and intended for reuse or which have little or no commodity value for reuse, including containers on which deposits are commonly charged by vendors.

I don't know how staunchly enforced this is since many freeze-dried food packages use foil, as well as Pop-Tarts, Kool-Aid, etc. I have had my campsites and/or permits checked half a dozen times by park officials, with no complaints. I would guess that unless you leave behind a pile of foil wrappers, there will not be a problem.

I noticed today that they sell foil-pouched individual slices of SPAM that are approximately the size you'd use on a sandwich and are decently thick slices.  At $.88 a slice I thought it was a rip-off until I considered PJ claims to eat his de-canned SPAM even after it starts turning pretty colors.  This would avoid the whole is-it-to-green-to-eat debate (not that I have any idea if PJ even thinks twice about it, nor do I have any idea how long it takes to turn green).  I have seen bloated moose carcasses in the park and those are bad enough.  I'd prefer to avoid seeing a kilt-clad PJ carcass out there (though alcohol does preserve tissue doesn't it?)

So for the Boxcar lovers out there, this product may be for you.  I suspect it would also work pretty well fried up and diced into any egg dish, or stews, or whatever.

You may want to see if you can locate Sweet Sue brand ham in the foil pouches. I found them yesterday at one of the supermarkets here in FL tried it for lunch yesterday tossed with hot egg noodles, Italian bread crumbs that were fried in margarine. One word of caution drain the package of ham before dumping it into the noodles and bread crumbs. My picky kids love this combo.
