Other Food Items to consider

I know the foil packed meats are a great addition to the food sorces on our trips.  But I know and have used many others from the grocery stores.
Denny Moore has a nice selection of meals that are in a 100% plastic container.  The down side though they are heavy and bulky.
Hope some of you have others that might increase the food selection this year.

Here is some options

squeeze tubes of pudding and peanut butter. I put the PB on tortillas for lunch.

I know many do this also but noodle dishes with tuna or chicken or rice-a-roni with the same.

Power bars for lunches. I like Clif bars-they are easy, quick and give lots of energy and nutrition.

sugar free crystal light or tang. Comes in very small plastic container that makes 2 quarts of drink each. Can fit inside of a cup or cook kit. Takes up no room and easy to mix.

Breakfast bars-oatmeal or milk and cereal bars. I used to bring pop tarts for quick no cook breakfasts. Now I go the oatmeal breakfast bars if I do not want to cook.

Those are a few

Hey Bog
I think your meals last Sept where you repackaging and vac sealing the salami and cheese.   With the pita bread.  I'm going to try this in Aug.

Bogs.

Ever try the mini-pitas?  They will save you a little space and might be a bit handier size.

But tortillas are always good.  You can spread a lot of different stuff on them or use them as a wrap.  Not bad for "soft" fish taco's either.

I always take a couple packs of these (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links). This type of cracker is as popular to the Swedes as bread is to Americans. They stay crisp, do not stale and won't get mold (at least for the time your out). They are great with sliced deli and cheese. Also make a good base for peanut butter and Herseys. Very handy for those lunch stops when you are checking out a campsite.

Well.. Pita molds fast imo, so i agree with t-soft shells. PB and Jell is great later on in yer trips, but ham and cheese keeps well for a bit. As far as crackers, I'm stuck on "Chicken in the Bisquick". Pass the molases please.

Hey K...

Please elaborate on the "Chicken in the Bisquick" thing.  Is there a recipe or is it something you just throw together?  Another perfect use for the chicken in the foil packets?

QPassage-
We had one of the Dinty Moore meals on our trip this spring.  Worked good but like you say They're kind of bulky and a big item in the trash bag.  Other than that it was very good.  Just put in a pot of boiling water for about 8 minutes and it's done!

I was just about to give up the search for this item when I ran into it again this evening.  The "mini pitas" are produced by (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) under the product name Pitettes Pita Bread.  They are about 2 inches in diameter and are produced in either white or whole wheat.

The bag of 30 or so I bought tonight at a local (chain) grocery store was $1.99.  I think the first time I noticed them was as WalMart.

Hope this helps out on future trips.

Jackfish....... My apologies.... "Chicken in the Bisket".  Dang...Chicken in the Bisquick brings up some options? I do enjoy pancakes from time to time on my trips, but Bog Walkers menue looks similar to mine, along with plenty of jerky. FYI, I'm in the market for a good resonably priced dehydrator. Bog's Liver suggestion did not work out very well.... (Dehydrated Doggie Treats Thread). Grin

If you are willing to mess with cooking pancakes, here is a good recipie for taco shells that are made like pancakes:  1 cup whole wheat and/or regular flour (reg. flour holds them together better).  I cup fine ground corn meal.  1/2 tsp salt.  3-4 eggs, fresh or equivalent in dry.  2 Tbl oil, goes into the ingredients.  1 1/2 cup cool water, or so...adjust so you have an average pancake batter consistency.  With dry egg of course you have to add more water.  Combine all in a bowl, stir well and let stand about 1 hour, this also helps to assure they hold together when you fill them.  Cook as for pancakes, I ususally do one at a time, with a little oil to grease the pan.  Then fill with whatever you like in your taco shells or pitas.  Don't over brown or they get hard and will crack.  Makes a soft shell taco and if the batter is thicker you get a thicker more beefy taco shell.  Should make around 8-12 big taco shells at least.  IC

Another good "no cook" lunch is Summer sausage. Never spoils. Comes in various sizes. Can put it on crackers, with cheese, or whatever. Lots of energy, very compact and very filling.

Also recommend the Lipton instant peach tea. It's sweet (if you like it that way), but a very refreshing drink of high quality.  Ditto on Crystal light. BUT.....Be sure to try the various flavors. Some of them will pucker you up all the way to Winter!

The Oberto beef jerkey is really good, but awfully pricey. No doubt the best around, as it is very moist and tasty. But at $1.00 per ounce, I'm such a tightwad I can't enjoy it more than once or twice per trip!!!!

The new pre-cooked (non-refrigerated) ground beef (Walmart) opens up the possibility of biscuits and gravy for breakfast.  Makes me hungry just thinkin' about it. Now where's my reflector oven?

The cooked non-refrig beef also opens new horizons on dehydrated soups. Have several vegey and rice soups that will become much more satisfying with some spicy meat included.

UPDATE:

I took this item on a backpacking trip during the end of July (25th - 29th).  The mini-pita's were very tasty (with chicken salad), but you'll have to pack them in something to protect them.  (I didn't.)  They will tend to crumble a bit during the "transport" process if left in the original packaging.  But keep in mind that this was a backpacking trip and the amount of abuse the "pitas" received in a couple of days would likely be equivalent to that received in over a week of canoe/portage "abuse."

Lipton makes some Chicken Fried Rice that's easy and pretty tasty.  I like to throw in a few extra freeze dried peas so I don't miss my veggies.  Last year I took freeze dried peas and sweet corn.  A side dish of veggies might not sound too appetizing to die-hard meat & potatoes guys but they sure tasted good to this veggie lover.  Another plus - virtually no weight.
