	Just a thought. The idea of a bushwhacker's rendezvous was and still is interesting. The clues certainly have been. After all these years I'm afraid I'll almost be disappointed when the location is finally revealed. Stumpy, it's your show but I have a suggestion 'cause I've seen wild guesses all over the place. What about just reposting the most helpful clues on Pearl Harbor day? It might solve a problem or two plus if someone actually got it wrong they'd they'd still have an interesting trip and probably come back with a story or two. Just a thought. It's your deal. Bullheads can be very tasty though. Quetico bullheads? Really? My mouth is watering.

I've been canoeing Quetico every year since 1975 and been to over 400 lakes. I haven't worn bug repellent since 1976. I have many stories to tell, but clicking on the internet does not make you worthy to hear them. See you in 2005 if your good enough. - Stumpy - Posted on Sep 23, 2001, 6:17 PM Love "out of the way " lakes by Stumpy 1---I would say no, there are not many of us that go into these remote lakes. 2--On lake names, it's hard to tell. Some of the names are very old, however, Goodier Lake is named on some old maps I have from the 50's and guides I've talked to who worked at the old lodges on Basswood Lake referred to Goodier by name. However, if you have connections with the map company you have a chance at naming the lakes as in the case of Bill Rom, Jr. naming Rom Lake after bushwacking into there many years ago. I would not consider Goodier Lake a bushwack as there are portage trails all the way there. Try a lake like Dettbarn if you want a real bushwack! If you look further back on this board a few pages you will find reference to a "bushwacker's jamboree 2005". I have had this in the plans for a couple of years and periodically post information on it. It will be a chance for like-minded adventurers to gather and enjoy the wilderness. Although I've left hints......i.e. Babe Ruth Posted on Oct 9, 2002, 9:39 PM A few tips... by Stumpy Fortunatley I bushwhack better than I type and spell. I don't do proper orienteering but I do use a compass, deadreckoning and common sense. I don't use GPS, however on A bushwhack last summer my companion brought one and traced our route (thats not what got us there). Worst swamp stuck in ? (besides the Portage Bar) Well, define stuck...I'm here are'nt I ? Probably diferent spots along the Dettbarn Creek. We ussually stick to the high ground when possible. Should you give up...? YES Just kidding but I can't answer that for you. I admit I got "turned around" last year while looking for the "old" portage along the creek between the Wawiag River and Belair Lake. My compass was back in a pack and I foolishly veerd to far from the creek. I did'nt pannic and all ended well. When bushwhacking I am more prepared. I allways say that with your camp on your back, you are never lost. You can pitch camp anywhere in Quetico and find some water. So single portaging is a key. I also often have great suport, be it Rangeline, Lake Trout or Son OF Lake Trout. They can all portage like hell and have good sense of direction. Rangeline sniffs out lakes like a dog and I'm not sure I could out portage Lake Trout. Rangeline, L.T. and I honed our portage skills over 20 years ago while working together at an Ely area outfitter. L.T. and I would do "Basswood River Tows". This meant driving customers to the Horse Portage then carrying thier gear over. We would try to impress for tips and then to out-do each other. Eventually we were each carrying 2 food packs and a square-stern NONSTOP. They had to unload us at the end because our arms would not work,and we could'nt tell the boss because he would yell at us. That's over 200 pounds for a mile and I only weighed 165 at the time. I can't do that now but I can still ignore the pain. What I often do is just aim at a lake that is perpendicular to our line (sort of a no-miss) then march. We stop often to check the compass and aim at a yonder spot. We are almost allways ammazed to find ourselves at the very bay or cove we aimed at. I know we are not alone at this (Lake Trout met a guy the other day, who has been to Dettbarn, Swartman and more) that is reason for the Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005. I want to meet these people and hear thier stories and tell mine...Stories you have to earn to here. Here are the basics:: WHO...Whoever can get a permit and get to the location on the date(s) to be named later. WHAT...It will be an informal meeting of tough and hardy travelers, where stories and information will be told. Things that should be earned. WHERE...It will be on a lake near the middle of Quetico, with no name, no portage trail to it (NONE), good depth, good water, plenty of bugs and campable shoreline. WHEN...It will be in mid June 2005 (When bugs are bad and so are voyageurs)...And every 5 years after that, I hope. WHY...Because the best information should be earned. Because I hold back on some stories on this board and I know others do to. Because exploring those no-name lakes makes for great adventure. Because I want to meet other bushwackers and here where they've been and tell them where I've been and exchange great stories. Because I want to shake the hand of anyone who gets there! HOW...Barring any changes in the permit system...I will anounce the exact date and location on this website at .....9:00 PM, DECEMBER 7th, 2004. Most the bushwhack/no name lakes in the Quetico are smaller...the lake northwest of Turn Lake being one exception...but not the only exception. On my last flight to Clay I took special note and video. It is amazing how many of those little pothole lakes look deep enough to hold fish and look worthy of a visit. I was just watching the video again tonight. THere are so many potential routes out there, if you are willing to cut some gear weight and do a little sweating to get through them.....Oh well, another "off" season full of dreams. 	"A computer is like an Old Testament god, with a lot of rules and no mercy." ~Joseph Campbell This machine in general: I know the 5500 character limit is a PITA for trip reports but those with a clue and something worthwhile to offer always find a way. The limit exists to remind folks (like me) about getting long winded and boring. The goal is to save everyone time and bandwidth. The PDB has a built in penalty for brevity wile it's encouraged on these pages. Go figure. One size NEVER fits all. Humdrum, like crotch deep muck are things best avoided when you really want to get somewhere and are determined to pack light. It's Stumpy's call.
