ATTENTION! From one fairly newbie to other newbies

Hello All

I just wanted to make this post to help people out. Newbies, Guests, and maybe even members.

I am fairly new to this site. I have not even been here one month. My first post here was made when I was yet a guest trying to find information. It was a question post.  One that, had a taken a bit of time to check the site out before posting, I could have answered myself. I have since had it removed.

I would like to suggest to all new people here, that you take a few hours and browse this site before you ask questions. You maybe be able to answer them for yourself.

Check out the Forums, both  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links). Go to the (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and start reading the site from the beginning.

If you still have a question from there go to the (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and type in your question. If it is not answered there, then post a question in the (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).

This may save you a lot of unanswered question and possibly smart remarks. I think that people get tired of answering the same thing over and over again.

I do not think that they are trying to be mean by not answering. I think it just gets old for them.

So do yourself a favor. Do the older (I mean this by membership time not age Wink ) members a favor. And last but not least, do db a favor. Exhaust all other avenues of answering your question before posting it.

You may just find that you answer your own questions. There is a massive amount of information here. If you can not find it then ask. But please try to find it first.

I truly believe this is the best help that I or anyone else here can give to a newbie.

From one newbie to all others!

Mark

One thing to note regarding searches: be sure to adjust the "days to search" (or similar), from the default of 7 to, say 700 or so.

Db, would it be a good idea (or possible) to change that default to something longer? I think a lot of well-intentioned searches come up short because folks don't catch that. Just a thought.

Actually, you really need to know what your doing to use the board's search function. You can really narrow down what your looking for if you know how to work it and that has some advantages but...

For newbies, I'd suggest the google search (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links). You can get a ton of results from only this site and while not everything, it's much quicker and easier to get something if you're just wondering.

BTW - I reindexed and re-enabled the old forum and basic site search today. They are pretty useful too but they don't search this forum. There's a LOT of stuff all over. Personally, it amazes me that we still have anything to talk about that's not been covered before. Yet with new people comes new ideas information - old views change...

I don't mind questions directed at me through IMs and the like. It's just that I've gotten 80 IMs since the move (I think one or two may have even been move related). Then there's e-mail and the contact link... All I'm saying is that if you need help, ask - but if you ask me a difficult question I can't just assume was an FYI - It could be a while. Simple things normally get answered pretty quickly but some things just get buried so ask again if needed. The board is always faster if someone else might know.

Take it form me - you definitely learn more by answering questions than asking them around here. For the invisible people who just read, well, good luck with that path.

Ranger, Thank you. I had forgotten to add the days to search bit.

I use 7000 days in the search as the site is over 700 days old. Wink Wink

The board's search function is very good at defining parameters for a search to find exactly THE single post you remember. It also shows you the entire results (including pictures), so you have to (can) scroll through looking for your search term in context if you get a lot of results.

If you enter 7000 here, your search will take over a minute as it rips through every post ever written. Use the Google site search (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and in less than a second you'll be scrolling through your search terms in context.

Currently, Google has 53,400 pages from this site in it's index. I didn't even know QJ had that many pages. Google gave me that information in 0.23 seconds.

The only thing of relevance it does not index in a ~week or so is the Inukshuk forum, member list...    7 days is adequate for guests and members who want up to date info. There's really no such thing on this site.

I just wanted to say thanks for this site. I am a newbie here and I would never have found it if I wasn't planning a trip to the area. However now that I have found it I just wanted to mention that unlike any of the other sites I have visited over the years (anybody remember the terms BBS or Sysop) I think that the people inhabiting this one are some of the most comfortable I've run across. There seems to be a lack of attitude here that is hightly prevalent on the others I've been on.  This group is more like the real people I run across in the wilderness, a peaceful calm that shows strength and confidence as a result of solid experience. A genuine cameraderie I don't see much in cyberspace but run across frequently around campfires way out in the wild.  I am looking forward to spending time in your area this summer.  I don't know how many times I'll be returning to the area since I love new vistas and I still have a lot of world left to canoe.  But, I would very much like to be able to stop by this campfire for a long time to come.

Welcome aboard Seasoned_Warrior!

This is why I elected to set up a base camp here.  I daytrip from time to time on other sites, but this one gets 99% of my energy and focus for these very reasons.

I think it proves that the wilderness will shape us, if we let it.  This is a community full of those who let the wilderness shape them, rather than the other way around.
