There are certain foods that, on trips, seem to hit the spot for me. Here's my short list of things I'll almost always bring but rarely, if ever, eat at home.

Graham crackers, honey, licorice, pretzel sticks, bread sticks, Hershey bars (w/nuts), breadsticks, lemon drops, snaps, heat and serve rolls, Beth Buckley bars, power bars, oranges, apples... Even my gorp ingredients are normally eaten separately at home.

We'd even take real ice cream complete w/Hershey's syrup on summer trips. Usually by the second day it was like a really thick shake. (By the third, straws were a good idea no matter what level of cooler expertise.)

What sort of odd and/or frivolous snack items hit the spot for you on BW/Q trips?

What do you miss most food-wise?

Snacks -
gorp, with lots of m&m's and fruit in it.  Can eat that all day.
raisins: I usually have a box of raisins in my pocket when fishing/hunting for a quick pick me up.
jerky - sometimes a nice teriyaki flavored dried beef can really get your mouth watering.

missed foods:

Bread was something we missed on our trips until we started taking ingredients for fresh biscuits.  Before that, tortillas were as close as we got.

I think there's always a desire for greasy food.  A cheeseburger or steak and french fries is an excellent first meal once you return to civilization, regardless of whether it's a weeklong trip in the Q or a weekend backpacking trip up Penn's Creek (a little bit of heaven here in PA).  Perhaps it's the natural desire for the intake of fat after a prolonged period of a rather low-fat diet.  Perhaps it just goes well with the beer.

Hey PGH,

What is Penn's creek?  I am boy scout leader always looking for weekend action for scouts.  We are in cleveland area and go to Minister Creek if you know where that is.  If you are talking eastern PA, forget about it thou, too far.

The only thing I miss is ice...as in an ice cold drink. After a week or two of luke cool Nalgenes a fountain drink packed with ice really hits the spot.

indulgences i take along are pretty simple.   we always take a bag or 2 of assorted mini hershey candy bars.  im lucky...i love dark chocolate, no one else seems to (good for me).

a bag of mixed nuts are also along (made a great ground squirrel friend last september, i think we fed him more than we ate)

hard candy...specifically jolly ranchers....watermellon...mmmmmmmmmmm.

Jan

btw....i also miss an ice cold beverage, as the beaver does.  would it be overkill to pack a cooler of ice cudes protected by dry ice??  hmmm.....possibilities.

I usually don't bring anything odd or frivolous, except one time I brought freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches.  That wasn't so good.  I'd say the venison stix Gimp_of_01 brings along are a sure-fire snack.

What I miss food-wise is gyros sandwiches.  Heck, I'm jonesin' for one right now.

Here are some personal and group snack favorites:

-  dried watermelon (from fresh, the yellow-fleshed ones are awesome)
-  dried cherries (from fresh or canned tart cherries)
-  dried cranberries (commercially prepared as craisins)
-  dried pineapple (from canned chunks)
-  dried banana chips (from fresh bananas)
-  dried apricots (commercially prepared, Turkish)
-  fig newtons (or cranberry newtons)
-  smoked cheese and crackers (commercially prepared)
-  beef sticks (commercially prepared , Hickory Farms)
-  smoked venison (dry, not chewy)
-  hot tamales (the red cinnamon candies, replaced atomic fireballs - a choking hazard)
-  dried smoked salmon (from canned smoked salmon, just a pinch between cheek and gum)
-  dried tomatoes (from canned, diced (or crushed) and spiced tomatoes)
-  dried green olives (from prepared jars - really salty)
-  boullion cubes (another salt kick)
-  instant pudding (peanut butter chocolate is my favorite, but hard to find lately)
-  Gatorade drink mix (allows me to happily hydrate more often)

What I crave after a few days is chocolate milk and Coke Classic.

A couple of years ago one of the guys in our group was resting.  He asked from inside the tent if we had any apples left, we had a few granny smith (tart).   He asked me to cut one up and fry it in a little butter.  I humored him.  He then asked if we had any cinnamon granola bars, we did.  Crumble them up and fry them too he said.  I added a little more butter and fried them too.  We had a great fresh apple crisp sitting by the fire in the BW, if only there was a good ice cream substitute.
