After reading Outamatches post and link for a Flashing Oven, I decided to build one.
I had flashing in garage and some "ideas" of my own. One of the "drawbacks" in our minds was the inability to check on the baking items without removing the top pie pan?? I believe my solution solves that problem?
The original plans show a piece of aluminum flashing about 12" high and cut to the circumference of 9" pie pan plus a few inches overlap. There was 3 holes drilled thru flashing about half-way up to form baking rack.
These were made of small threaded rod. The flashing "tube" just basically set in one pie pan/w the other as the cap. A small hole was drilled in top pan with a mini hi-temp thermometer inserted.
I didn't have threaded rods and decided to go a different route? I thought steel rods would eventually start to rust, so I used heavy galvanized wire, the kind you hang suspended ceilings with. I cut 4 rods about 11"long and bent a 1" L on one end like a tent stake. One rod go's thru the bottom pie plate across the center thru flashing tube. I wanted a one piece unit to move around. The other 3 rods go across mid-way acting as the baking rack.
Because I didn't opt for threaded rod, I needed to find a way to retain tubular shape on top of oven. I chose to drill a 1/4" hole a few inches down from top, were the flashing overlaps and used a 1/4"x 1/2" stainless bolt and stainless wing nut to secure.
I found a mini high temp thermometer at do-it-yourself appliance repair shop. About the size of a quarter and reads to 550 F. It cost about $8.
While shopping for a top pie plate, I had what I think is a great idea?? I saw a 9" pie pan made out of silicone? The light bulb went on!! I could save weight and also address the problem of checking on baking item. I bought a 7" silicone trivet as well. I used a razor knife and cut out a 3" diameter circle in silicone pie pan and then laid trivet equal distance over bottom of pan. I then used my leather hole punch and put 1 hole thru trivet and baking pan, slightly smaller than thermometer. The thermometer acts as a pin and allows you to peel back trivet and view baking items without losing to much heat. Silicone remains fairly cool, so you can do it bare handed.
My first attempt at baking on my gas range with a diffuser was only partially successful because bottom was well done but top was barely done??
I quickly realized that I needed a baking pan smaller than the one I used because the heat wasn't circulating evenly! I went to smaller pan and it worked like a charm. I used it on my Peak 1 with equal success.
I made a wire bail for baking pan so it would be easy to remove. I also made a wire rack for baking pan so I can bake fish and let the oil drain off (thinking laker).
All in all, I think its a worthy alternative to reflector oven, with added bonus's of being usable on stove top and being unaffected by the rain.
Will give a "real" world report after my May trip??
